why not just go to a building site and ask?

Good idea. I don't know too much about it, but isn't there also some funny unwritten rule where a site has to employ a certain number of trades from the immediate area / vicinity of the site? So start local and work outwards from there!

Go into a building site @ about 10am, or 2pm (not too soon after breakfast or lunch) on a weekday, and ask are there any jobs going for a general operator (I think thats what they're called). Ask at the office type building if you can, as they may know what set of builders will take someone on, or need a hand.

Also, mention if its a full time job, or weekend work. If you've done your LC, it may be worth your while, if you like the job there, to look into doing a FAS apprenticeship in that area of work.

Also, bring a CV, with some type of refrence (if this is your first job, get a teacher as a reference), so they know that your reliable.
