During summer hope to stay one night at a hotel in Las Vegas.Wife and two kids are going to be there also.Just want to see if anyone has any suggestions for a good hotel that will have something for the kids to amaze them for the night before we head off to Grand Canyon next day.

    Thanks

    Hmmm,

If they like ed star trek-you could stay at the Las vegas Hilton ( not that expensive) and do it

    http://www.startrekexp.com/

I was there last year and its very realistic and great crack-though a little short
About an hour does all three.

Then nip up to the new york New York Hotel (massive like all the hotels in Vegas) and get on their rollercoaster-its something else!

Thanks for that Earthman, but kids are not into the star trek thing, they are only 7,10. Rollercoaster seems a good idea though.

I stayed in the stratosphere and couldn't reccomend it more, thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. Book through www.vegas.com the prices for all hotels were cheaper on it than on the hotel website. You should be able to find a hotel in what ever budget you have

Just back from Vegas (Monday) and would recommend a visit to everyone. We stayed in the Sahara, not recommended as it wasn't very clean at all. Part of our group stayed in the Stratosphere and really enjoyed their stay. Only complaint was that it was the far end of the strip and would involve a taxi ride at the end of the night. It also has a rollercoaster type ride.

There are so many hotels to chose from - the Wynn looked good wasn't in a bad location, Paris looked really good (great buffet by the way).

    Hope this helps

You might try New York, New York. Didn't stay there, but went on the rollercoaster (that goes around the outside of the hotel) and the access to the coaster is through a huge games arcade.

Id recommend the stratosphere as well, pretty much because its reasonable, really nice and has a revolving restaurant and rollercoaster on the top of it. Outstanding views of the strip.
New York New York looks brilliant and will take your breath away! Actually pretty much any of the casino's over there will.
I cant wait to go back!

Re the stratosphere being at the endof the stripIt is true but you can get all day passes dor the regular bus that runs from Old Vegas the full length of the strip so you can get where ever you want at any time of the day. New Your was a fun casino and the roller coaster was good. I just wanted to see as many of the casinos as possible so basically went from one to another. I would reccomend going into Paris to watch the Bellagio fountain show.

I think in Vegas the hotels are attractions in themselves - stayed in the Luxor with two teenage daughters 2 years ago - they loved it. It's Egyptian kitsch but done in the best possible taste. The shows in Vegas are also great - we went to The Blue Man Group - basically because it was the only reasonably priced tickets we could get - the kids loved it - I think young children would enjoy it as it the show interacts with the audience. If you want to stay in a top hotel in Vegas try and do it mid week - the difference in rates between a Friday and a Wednesday are frightening. The rooms in the Luxor fitted us comfortably. We stayed our last night in the Embassy Suites hotel which was off the strip but close to the airport. It is a 2 room suite so may be very suitable - it includes breakfast and prices were very reasonable, you can book it through their web site - they are part of the Hilton Group. I think 3 days in Vegas itself is enough, and the trip down to the Grand Canyon via the Hoover Dam is quite an easy trip. We rented a convertible which in theory was a great idea but because it was mid August and 42 degrees - it was too hot to have the top down!

stayed in the Circus Circus, which has a Circus theme (no surprise there)...there is an admusement park on the 2nd floor of the hotel! the rooms were nice and clean and pretty cheap too...weekdays in vegas are pretty cheap for accommodation anyway..

the only thing about it was that it was at the start of the strip and a good walk to the other end of the strip....
    the casino was great also!

I was just about to post similar thread when I stumbled across this one. I will be heading to Vegas in October for 5 days and I cannot stop looking up things about Vegas. The prices have only become viewable for that month as they only show up to 6 months ahead. The best prices that I have found so far have been the Luxor and Treasure Island. I was told from a friend of mine that the Luxor was a great hotel. My parents are only back from Vegas 2 days ago and they stayed in the Mirage and they said that it was a lovely hotel. But no matter what, walking between casinos will seem like miles. You will get over the size of the strip when you get there, or so I’m told. For the kids, I would stay in Excalibur, the Aladdin, New York, or the MGM Grand. Don’t bother looking at the Bellagio, the Wynn or the Venetian, unless you are the owner of a 06 Beemer and have floods of cash, they are nuts expensive and not really for kids.
Of the things that I have read, there are so much to do with kids, like... seeing the Buccaneer Bay show at the Treasure Island, which is a big free show outside the hotel with pirates and ships. You could also visit the Adventuredome at Circus, circus. Or go on the taxi roller coaster at New York.
Anyway can anyone tell me also what Treasure Island is like? I would also like to stay in the Paris or Excalibur if anyone has and views on that.

A great website for booking hotels and finding their website is at: http://www.visitlasvegas.com/vegas/stay/planning-information/maps/index.jsp?map=0

I stayed in Circus Circus also and I would not recommend it to anyone. The rooms were shabby and the buffet was terrible in comparision to other hotels. No matter how cheap it was I would NEVER stay there again.

    One problem with the luxor.
There are no windows to open, just glass in the rooms.
They can get very stuffy and unhealthy. If you are away for the day,the sun belting into the room(even with the curtains closed) will make the room a furnace and it never really recovers from that.
I stayed there and would have went elsewhere had I known.
The entire building is huge with the rooms on the edge of it as its shaped like a pyramid so when you go out the door into the coridoor,3ft away theres a railing and a sheer drop of several hundred feet.
Thats something you may not like.
I dont normally have vertigo but found I had to look away when heading for the lift.
It's definitely not the place to stay if you intend having a few beers.

There are a couple of reasonable mid-range hotels on the strip that you could look into : The Imperial Palace, The Holiday Inn Boardwalk Hotel, and Excalibur. You could try http://www.travelocity.com or http://www.exepdia.com. It's generally pot-luck, but you can get some real deals through these websites.

Yea MGM grand is a great spot - the lions in the lobby are a nice attraction. New York New York is good too (rollercoaster) - aslong as you stay on the strip you'll be in the center of all the action.

I didn't like the way they had the lions at all.

    Thought it was very cruel

What is there to do in Las Vegas apart from gamble?

  • Subscribers Posts: 32,859 ✭✭✭✭5starpool

    Strippers.

There are different shows on every night, there is loads of shopping and probably loads of other things, but if you don't want to gamble or disapprove of it then going for anything more than a couple of days is probably not the wisest thing ever. I am going for 15 days in July. Can't wait. I'll be staying in Bally's. I've heard mixed reviews of the place, but I don't envisage critiqueing the place too much. Place to lay the head with a great location.

What is there to do in Las Vegas apart from gamble?

There is absolutely tons to do apart from gamble, first the going around seeing all the hotels/casinos will take at least a day. You are best off getting tickets to one of the shows that are on over there, we went to phantom of the opera and that was brilliant, my parents went to Le Reve when they were there by themselves, they loved that too. You can also book a trip to go to the Grand Canyon; there are tons of people you can book a trip with. If you are adventurous, you can go on the rides on top of the stratosphere; they were brilliant, things like a ride that spins around dangling over the edge of a tower that is about 1100 meters above ground.
There are tons of websites that you can look up for things to do in Las Vegas, we got one of the rough guide travel books or you could get a lonely planet book, but you will need to plan you trip at least a month in advance, if you want to guarantee tickets to shows n stuff. We booked our hotel 3 weeks before we went. We stayed in the Luxor, but you are better off staying further up the strip, maybe in the mirage or Treasure Island.
Id be here all day saying other stuff to do over there, but we definitely filled 5 days that we were there and we could have stayed at lest another week, so you shouldn’t run out of things to do.
