Is it true that a Labour guy and a Socialist guy have placed a motion of no confidence against our illustrious president because he cocked-up a deadline?

Yep you heard right, read on the Observer that he mixed up 2 deadlines. We can all make mistakes...

Motion of No Confidence in UCDSU President

This motion has been submitted to be on notice for Council on February 27th. Because of its more obviously urgent nature I've posted it online before the deadline for submission of motions.

Council notes that the deadline for the submission of motions for USI National Congress 2006 was 5pm on Friday, 17 February 2006.

Council also notes that the UCDSU President had received information of this deadline many days in advance of the deadline.

Council further notes that the UCDSU President only released this information on the day of the deadline.

Council further notes that an emergency meeting was called for 3pm on the day of the deadline, to discuss motions for USI National Congress, and that the UCDSU President did not attend this meeting.

Council further notes that many UCDSU Councillors were unable to attend the meeting due to the short notice.

Council notes with concern the stress that UCDSU Councillors were caused due to the short notice of this meeting, and the time limit of 2 hours to construct, type and email 10 motions for USI National Congress.

Council notes that the UCDSU President was negligent, and that due to this negligence, Councillors were forced to construct 10 motions under extreme pressure, and that there may have been the possibility of missing the deadline.

Council condemns the UCDSU President, and therefore Council no longer has confidence in James Carroll, President of University College Dublin Students’ Union.

Proposed by Darragh Ó Bradáin, 3rd Arts
Seconded by Darren Cogavin, 3rd Social Science

I was asked to sign a petition supporting him. I did. He mixed up a deadline big-deal.
(No doubt enda will say this is what you get for communicating with the administration.:v:  :o:p:):D )

What does a vote of no confidence mean for the president? Are his powers (assuming he has any  super or otherwise) diminished now, or is it just a symbolic up-yours at him for bein a c*nt? lol

If this motion is passed this is what will happen:
James will not be in charge so this will be left to the other sabbatical officers. With Dave,Dan and Jane all taking holidays next week for the next three weeks, Anthony kelly will act as president of the union for those 3 weeks.

If the motion is passed it will be Carroll's decision to stand down and no one elses'.

I'm no big fan of Carroll but I feel this motion of no confidence is a bit harsh.

Yeah Carroll has f**ked up big time on this one, no getting away from that fact but all this over one (yes, big) f**k up???

I know he won't go down in history as a great UCDSU president but I believe for for a motion like this to even occur it should be a result of constant mistakes and failings and not one mess up..

Hmm, I like the motion, but looking at the names of those who propose it, that puts me off.

this whole thing is sick and twisted. It reeks of nothing more than cynicism and just down right nastiness. I dont think he's been a good president, but for pete's sake, give him his 6 weeks and let him go and live on. This whole thing is just wrong.

James Carroll's our president and as such is supposed to set an example.

The only example he's set has been of being a lazy git with no scruples, ideals or purpose.

Put simply, I have no confidence in him.

Glad at least two SU officers share that opinion...

This is definatly the worst motion I've seen so far with this years su and its u against some pretty stiff competition!

I have to admit I think James is a pretty sound bloke.I think he made a mistake on not fully informing everyone sooner about the usi deadline.Still though,he most certainly doesnt deserve this motion of no confidence.
There's no way this motion will get passed anyway and I think the two people who proposed it are time wasters.

Suppose this motion was passed earlier on in the year, say november - would an election have to be called or would the sabbats just have to relieve the president from duty?

Nope... Basic logic dictates that essentially UCDSU carries on without a permanent President, with either the Deputy Pres. taking over the duties of President in addition to his own, or, as in this particular case, the duties being shared around the 4 other Sabbats...

The President always has a designated Vice-President (i.e. one of the other four) who fulfills their meeting duties, etc, if they're not around. This year it's Dan, but the only times this really comes into practice is if James can't make Exec and Dan therefore is assumed to act as Chair instead. Had this motion been passed in, say, November, then it would still be up to James to resign or otherwise. Whether a seperate election for the rest of the year would be held I'm not sure - a few years ago an Ents candidate resigned and a by-election was held to fill it (the first ballot was actually won by RON).
