Young people being stereotyped

"Young people in Ireland are sick of being stereotyped by adults, according to a study conducted by the National Youth Council and the Equality Authority.
The research, based on interviews with 90 young people, found that they felt unfairly treated by adults and society in general, which constantly associates them with crime, delinquency, drugs and underage drinking.

The groups behind the study are now calling for the establishment of training for groups that work and deal with young people, with a focus on equality and how to combat stereotyping." ~ from the Independant.

TBH I don't really care if they are being stereotyped, even the young people have learned to play the hyper-sensative card now... great. Spin 103.8 had a Jecinta on the news there 'reacting' to reports that young people are getting a hard time from adults...

Reporter - Are you finding it tough to be taken seriously?
Jecinta - Yeeaarr, I mean, I don't kno wha de bleedin problem is lyke. It's not like we're all off robbin cars now or anything inanyways.
Reporter - So you're basically looking for older people to give you a break is it?
Jecinta - Yeeaarr das righ, I mean, we're all people at de end of de day like. Will dis be on de radio? Can I like say whatsdestory to Tiffany and em.. Jennifer?!*

    Get over it.

*I may have made the last bit up :o

Edited: I'm not entirely sure how, but apparently I offended someone *shrug*

As to young people being stereotyped, it happens to every group, sooner or later people will reaise that whether it has a name in sociology or not the act of making generalisations about people is an inevitable part of the need for security that is endemic to the human condition. And it's only relevant if you really let it get to you....

I swear this haircut is making my brain run faster, it's like I have better cooling now or something :v:

Stereo types are great....without them we wouldnt be able to make sweeping generalizations about people...and think of all the jokes that would go to waste..

well said. Without stereotypes, all scandinavian women would never have turned out to be naked volleyball players with twin sisters and incestuous lesbian tendencies. And imagine how much darker the world would be then.

everyone is stereotyped at every stage in their lives. Whether its young people being irresponsible sluts/alcoholics/criminals, 20somethings being a generation of massive users of recreational drugs/party animals, 30somethings being workaholics etc, middle aged people being menopausal/mid-life crises...

Er, very positive view of 20 somethings in your stereotypes. I won't even look at your profile - but guess you're in your 20's?

I am but, the point I'm making is that everyone is stereotyped, no matter how true/untrue they are. The stereotype of the 20somethings is one the media have us believe. Newspapers are full of articles about how people of that age like to spend their cash on holidays, partying etc than on investing in property etc, and how they are also the biggest users of drugs - hash, coke etc. I'm not saying its true, I'm just pointing out how ludicrous some stereotypes are.

90 people..... 90 people... They got that answer after interviewing just 90 people? I wonder if that statement is in fact a stereotype.

    ROFLMAO :D

I saw on News2day 2day <don't ask> there was some north dublin chap talking in a stereotypical north dublin accent:

"I hate the way all adults think that people in wheelchairs are goody-goodies"

What, as opposed to pyromaniac thieves and murderers? What would you prefer to be stereotyped as ffs?

    Excellent. :D

No matter whether we want to or not we always stereoype people, so I dont see the problem with it, myself.

Who else can you accuse of underage drinking if not young people.... It wouldn't make sense if you said middle aged people cause all the underage drinking problems.....

I don't like stereo-typing particularly, but I find most have more than a hint of truth to them - even if exagerated and stretched to include every single person in the range being discussed....:v:

Lol, so they interviewed 90 teenagers, and were told, "We think life's not fair!".

Wow, shocking revelations there! Must have been a slow news day yesterday

What next, OAPs complaining that they haven't had a job in years?
