if its a new system its most likely windows xp. Go to control panel and mouse settings.

Then click on the pointers tab. Under the customise section is NORMAL SELECT, highlight this, is it already an egg timer, if it is it shouldnt be. Click on the default button and see does it return to the normal pointer. If not choose the browse button and you can select the normal pointer from there

Let us know how you go

Dont forget to click the apply button when finished, clicking ok probably wont be good enough. Also while in the pointer tab screen you could also click to try one of the other available schemes from the dropdown menu if you want to.

If it's a new Dell system it also probably has 42 extra useless processes and services running in the background (which could also cause the eggtimer).

Press Ctrl Alt Delete (once!) and if it's anything over 20 or so processes, you can free up some memory and CPU time.

God I hate Dells bundled software, I really do.
