does anyone have these rules in their "Rules of the Road" Handbook?
they remind me of the last time I drove in Athy!:D
    Guide to driving in Ireland
Indicators will give away your next move. A confident Irish driver avoids using them.
Under no circumstance should you maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you, because somebody else will fill in the space, putting you in an even more dangerous situation.
The faster you drive through a red light, the less chance you have of getting hit.
Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork, especially with LH, MO, CN or MH plates. With no insurance, the other operator probably has nothing to lose.
Braking is to be done as hard and late as possible to ensure that your ABS kicks in, giving a vigorous, foot massage as the brake pedal violently pulsates. For those of you without ABS, it's a chance to strengthen your leg muscles.
Never pass on the right when you can pass on the left. It's a good way to prepare other drivers entering the motorway.
Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as a suggestion and are not enforceable in Ireland during rush hour.
Always brake and rubberneck when you see an accident or even someone changing a tyre. This is seen as a sign of respect for the victim.
Learn to swerve abruptly without signalling. Ireland is the home of high-speed slalom driving thanks to the Department of the Environment & Local Government, which allows utility companies to put potholes in key locations to test drivers' reflexes and keep them alert!
It is tradition in Ireland to honk your horn at cars in front of you that do not move three milliseconds after the light turns green.
To avoid injury in the event of a collision or rollover, it is important to exit your vehicle through the windscreen right away. Wearing your seat belt will only impede your hi-velocity escape from danger.
Remember that the goal of every Irish driver is to get ahead of the pack by whatever means necessary.
WARNING! Never come to a complete stop at a stop sign. No one expects it and it will result in you being rear-ended.

I always feel rushed at lights down there - there's a red/amber before the lights go green in NI. Much more relaxing. :)

One thing the NRA could look at when pondering over the road environment is how to put up road signs properly. The current approach down there is often little short of diabolical.

Ah, come on now. In most places the speed limits aren't even achievable during rush hour. :)

All that is needed for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.

MT obviously does not want the evil that is Irish driving and roadvstandards to prosper. He is simply trying to help. Do you deny that what he says has truth to it?

Not at all. But his obsession with road signs in the Republic of Ireland is a little worrying. Maybe somebody here could help.

Ha ha, Tony. Because as we all know anyone that takes an interest in improving the transport network must be insane. ‘God, better not maintain that,’ said the councillor ‘we don’t want people thinking we’re weird.’ Maybe that’s why things are so dire.

On the matter of road signs, that’s the beauty of the internet. I can stay in ‘Norn Iron’ and annoy you down there. :D

Think of it as a sort of outsourcing. You might not be interested in questioning the incompetent handling of road signs in your country so a ‘foreigner’ can do it instead. I’m the road network’s answer to an Indian call centre. ;)

But seriously, you must see how bad it often is down there – especially in comparison to most other European countries. So why not contribute to Murphaph’s thread and be proactive in highlighting this problem.

Just think the sooner it gets licked, the sooner you get shot of me. ;) C’mon Tony, don’t be so precious, it shouldn’t matter where someone resides if their criticisms of the transport authorities are valid. Even if it’s a psychiatric ward!!

Maybe a cross border solution could be the answer. Hand responsibility for signage throughout all of Ireland to Roads Service NI. That way you get our quality of signage and the EU will pick up the tab for a cuddly hands-across-the-divide initiative. We’d all be winners!

I'd go for that in a heartbeat! The Roads Service could teach our clowns a thin or three about signage.

    LOL

    Fair Play to ya MT.

I have to admit, I am in complete agreement with what you say about the signage here. It's crap. I think the problem is a simple one, in many cases, of penny pinching. And in others it's just a persistent ignoring of what makes sense.

OK man. You've got my respect. No more ballyragging you about your comments on signage. ;)

I just had a thought. Could they be called MT's sign posts ? :o
