Hopefully this will give you an idea, there's a lot of things that can limit an overclock like the mainboard(particularly Voltage wise) and memory dividers available unless you have some serious memory

    Some interesting clocks to note
    1. Misteroadster3700 (OverClocking-Masters) - 23.84 - 3700+ @ 3496MHz Caskad'chill
    2. CYK (XtremeSystems) - 24.07 - San Diego 3700+ @ 3388MHz Match II, tribute to Kokos
    3. xwoodoo (crazypc.ro OC Team) - 24.17 - 3700+@ 3512Mhz

    10. Vapor - 26.16 seconds - Opteron 146 @ 3175MHz

Although im sure the 3700+ clocks are at least on water or even phase change

I have seen Opteron 146's to clock to 3.1GHz on a good "air" cooling

I'd go with the Opteron for a decent overclock. Put it together with the same board as I've got and some better memory and your sorted. This Mushkin Redline DDR500 ain't as good as Mushkin reckon. The Mushkin XP4400......now there's some good RAM!!

IIRC the san Diego cores weren't famous for their OCing.

The early opterons are great clockers, as were the San Diegos. As the weeks go on, AMD's speed binning seems to get tighter as they are forced to produce more of the higher end chips at lower prices, so what might have sold as an opteron 144 when they were first released a year ago, now might be binned and sold as a 148. Fact is, when they were first released more of the lover end chips were in demand as opposed to now, where most tend towards the higher end chips.
You would have a better chance with the opteron over the san diego, but i wouldnt expect anything over 2.6-2.7 at best on good air cooling.
