connection dvi monitor to vga card

Any way to do this ?

Basically I have an lcd with a dvi only connection and I want to connect it to a vga only card. Anyone know how i would do this - im guessing there is an adapter, but I havnt had much look finding one.

if you didnt get one with your monitor you should have , they are very common , you should be able to pick one up in any computer store , Dixons , Currys , Maplins , PC world , and definitely should be no more than 5 - 10 euro.

i have male dvi to female vga connectors but I need female dvi to male vga - are you sure its just a simple plug and no conversions are required ?

With the adapter you have you can surely just get a standard VGA cable? Male-Male?

This is what you need , prices are scandalous in Maplins though , should be half that , although they are gold plated ones i suppose !!

Unfortunatly these cables wont work - I have a gf card with a female 15-pin vga port only. I have a monitor with a male dvi connection. I want to connect the male dvi connnection to the female 15-pin vga port so I need an adapter/cable with a female dvi connection on one end and a male 15-pin vga on the other.

Yes I was thinking thats the one (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37198&criteria=vga%20to%20dvi%20adaptor&doy=21m2) - couldnt see anything like that in Maplin on Sunday though.

That to me looks the exact same as the VGA-DVI cable in Peats?

What's the make and model of the monitor? Never actually seen any male DVI contacts on a monitor before as they tend to have female there as it's easier to swap a cable than the connector on the monitor if a pin is broken?

The peats ones is male to male - I cant really tell from the pic of that(ebay) cable but it looks like female(dvi) to male(vga).

Not questioning you or anything but are you 100% sure that the connection on the monitor is definately male?

Any monitor I have ever seen have had a female connector on it? May be proven wrong but can honestly say that I think that whatever manufacturer would put a male connector on the back of their monitor needs their head checked... :rolleyes: (or they've never had to swap a connector on a monitor which I can promise you is not fun!)

I would think that the cable you saw on ebay is male both ends...

Does your monitor support analogue input over DVI ?

If your monitor has a DVI-D input (as I suspect), it's purely digital and cannot be fed an analogue signal directly. This is quite common.

The adapters that people are suggesting you get are normally for graphics cards that have DVI outputs, where they can output analogue signal over the connector and you just need an adapter from DVI-I to VGA, to connect it to an old CRT monitor for example. In this case the signal out of the graphics card is still analogue, but using DVI connection.

What you want to do (if I understand correctly) is take the VGA output (analogue) and connect it to your DVI-D (digital) input on the monitor. To do this you will need an analogue to digital converter like this one (second on the page):

It's quite expensive and I think you'd be better off buying a new graphics card with a DVI connector instead.
