    no.. very disappointing stuff..

When I read it earlier on I thought it was another one of the spoof announcements. Sadly, it seems to be genuine. I suppose we should be grateful to Canon though, now theres no need to spend all that money on an upgrade :D

Yes... yes I will! I'll even let the people decide on a hat condiment.

Anyone care to arrange a location? *coughs*

It hit dpreview now with the following quote added:
Phil: Apologies to our readers, despite its earlier leak on the web we had to hold this news to its given embargo timing of 1100 GMT.

I would have expected more off an upgrade...they still have more products to announce I would like to see if they offer a new FF camera (canon 3D) or what they offer in the 1d series. Theres two new lenses also,

    EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
    EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM

Seeing as I just bought my 20D a couple of months ago Im Delighted at this new announcment and am right at this moment about 50% of the way through convincing myself that a 1.8 inch LCD is plenty big enough , so it is !!!

Bleh.. this isnt an replacement, it's a 20D with one more button and a slightly bigger screen. A replacement would indicate something that makes an upgrade from a 20D worthwhile. I'll be keeping my hat firmly on my head for now thanks :D

afaik the new 30d will be cheaper than the current 20d prices

Bah. Shame on you canon, I think nikon is winning over new SLR wannabes with the D200.

I think I'll keep my 300D for a bit longer.

If that's true then this could be a new type of entry level dslr? If so, then there should be a "true" 20D replacement rolling out...

Elessar this is not the entry level slr, the 350d is...the price for the 30d is quoted around the 1400euro mark for europe, add a couple of hundred if you want to buy this in Ireland, at the end of the day these are consumer camera bodies, if you want a real upgrade get a 1d series body...

I know what the entry level cameras are. I just thought that the price might have been around 1000-1200 euro, which isnt far off what you might call entry level. I guess not. I won't be upgrading anyway, 300D suits me fine!

Not so sure. Canon are not stupid and are not market leaders for nothing. The lack of a 10mp sensor may mean that either they don't see the advantage of going higher (like the Nikon D200 ...and it has its own problems) or it may also mean that the real 20D replacement is coming along later and that the 30D will move down the food chain as a (minor) step up from the 350D.

They obviously have a plan - we just don't know it yet.

If they'd use a 10 MP sensor, this cam would become a competitor for the much more expensive 5D. I think this cam is not meant for people with a 20D, but rather for people with a 3x0D/10D. The 20D is an excellent cam and this replacement seems to be even better for about the same price.

I agree with you Dimy. I have a 10D and might be tempted. If I had a 20D I definitely wouldn't. It seems like they are doing a bit of housekeeping which is no bad thing. I have always like the idea of digital cameras replicating film types e.g. Velvia, Kodachrome etc. It saves on post processing if you just want a quick job (this can be done from RAW files too). Canon have taken a step in this direction with this upgrade. I really dont see the point in the larger LCD or in going to 10Mpixs. Not many people need that many Mpix anyway.

I like the spot metering though, that has been badly lacking and the ISO reading in the viewfinder should have been there from the 10D.

The price is very tempting too though 20D's will drop dramatically and there seems to be a good few left in stock so that will be a real alternative for someong moving up to an SLR.

As I said, tempting for a 10D user.

Seems to me like they're just consoladating the sucess of the 20D with a slight improvement. With 18 month product cycles it's pretty difficult to have massive leaps forward in technology with every new camera! I don't get all the fracass about 2 more MP, it really doesn't make that much difference at all when you're getting up to that kind of level. And as the D200 shows more pixels on a small sensor= more noise. I'd prefer to keep it at 8 and have the brilliant low light/ high ISO performance that Canon have established!

The new 17-55 2.8 is really going to tempt me... I was going to go for the significantly more expensive 24-70 2.8L, but with a 17mm wide angle, and presumably very sharp images I think this one could win out when it gets to the summer!

Doesn't effect me either way, but that was a bit of an anti-climax to say the least! Why not just call it the 20D MkII?
The new EFS lens looks nice, but I'm not too fond of going EFS if I ever wanted to upgrade..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭heffsarmy

randombassist according to depreview this lens 17-55 F2.8 will hit the shops with a price tag of $1150, I would'nt pay that for an EF-S lens. The 24-70L f/2.8 on bhphoto site is $1129 .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 99 ✭✭randombassist

yeah, but starting at 24mm sp lacking wide angle, and also doesn't have IS which is meant to be brilliant.

That the 17-55 more up my street! I don't have a problem buying lenses for 1.6 crop, my camera is suiting me brilliantly at the moment, and I have no intention of upgrading it any time soon. So there is some method to my madess ;)

I would happily go for a 20D when the prices are knocked down.

In reality, if you can ignore the marketing hype, there isn't that much of a difference between 8 and 10 Mp. to double the resolution, you'd need to quadruple the sensor size, it's a bit early in the morning for me to calculate exactly how much an increase you'd get, and it'd only really make much of a difference at A3 size. If you're priniting those sizes regularly, you probably can justify needing the 1DsMII!

As for the 5D, it's big selling point is that full frame sensor, so that wide angle will actually mean that.

Still, as an "upgrade" it's disappointing, though on the bright side, there should be some 20Ds to be had for a song over the next few months.

Does this mean that the 20D will come down in price significantly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭dalk

I think the most interesting thing about this 'upgrade' is the fact that there was no pixel increase.

I hope this is the end of the megapixel marketing hype (8 megapixel being more that enough resolution for most people).

What i want to see most in new cameras is a reduction in price not an increase in pixels.
