i don't believe xp has regional protection ( i could be talking arse btw:))...it is more likely reporting from your actual drive...you could see if there is a way to region unlock your dvd drive using a firmware hack.

edit: http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/dvd/regions/regions.php has some basic info

There's 2 types of region protection

RPC1: The software (WinDVD, PowerDVD etc) keeps track of region and changes

RPC2: The DVD drive keeps track of region and changes.

If you have an RPC2 DVD drive (I think it tells you somewhere in the drives properties in Device Manager), you can usually get an RPC1 firmware or else a hacked RPC2 firmware that'll reset it's counter each time you reboot. Try the site Ruggie linked or else http://forum.rpc1.org/index.php. There's also some software that can sit between your DVD drive and windows and make it region free, so no need to flash new firmware, but I can't remember what it's called.

If you have an RPC1 drive, or flash your RPC2 drive to one, then you'll just need something to reset the counter in whatever software you use. DVD Genie works (or at least worked, I'm not sure if it's still updated) with most popular software.

Get yourself a copy of AnyDvd from Slysoft, it removes region codes from the disc as it's playing, therefore you don't ever need to change the region on the drive itself.

    Try this:

    http://www.dvd43.com/

It's only a little tool, and circumvents the Region Code. Since I installed it, I have never been asked for a region change, no matter how often I change to DVD's with different region codes.

    Can recommend it.

You can use software to unlock the region protection in Windows XP even if your drive is RPC-2.

There's plenty of them out there, here's one that you can download a trial of:

AnyDvd gets my vote. Removes copy protection from audio cds too so I can rip them to my iPod.
If you want a permanent solution head over to rpc1.org and see if they have a rpc1 flash for your drive.
