Which is the better card? Radeon 9800pro or geforce FX5900?

A friend of mine's son wants to play quake 4 whats the cheapest graphics card he would need to upgrad to? (The son is only 13 so the dad will be paying:) so he does not want to spend too much.........

First of all the 9800Pro is better than the 5900 as it can be flashed to a 9800XT IIRC. If not its still better by a small margin.

Minimium system requirements for quake 4

A slightly tricky question in that the title you mention is an OpenGL one you see the 9800 Pro is decent Direct-X 9 graphics card which is okay with OpenGL based games whereas the GFX 5900 was very poor with DX9 games but it was good with games that use the OpenGL API like Quake 4.

If you can get either of these cards for next to nothing I would suggest getting the GFX 5900 if all he intends to play is Quake 4 but if he wants to play something else* after he is done with Quake 4 then the 9800 Pro is a better choice.

(*A game based on Direct-X 9 like Farcry or Half Life 2)

Out of curiosity how much money is he willing to spend ??

    Thanks for that.

Where would you get the firmware to flash the card?

That has not been quantified yet:) I just promised the father I would try and get some information for him.

By the way my two questions are not related - in that the 'which of the two cards' question was just by way of information for myself.

be weary about flashing the 9800pro to 9800xt, as not all of the 9800pro's can accomplish this.

The only type of 9800pro cards which can be flashed to xt are the ones with the R360 core, which isn't many of them.

just letting you know incase you he gets a 9800pro and thinks it can easily be flashed

Ah okay if you don’t have access to either of those cards both of which have been superseded by two generations then something in the current mid to low range would do specifically NVIDIA as OpenGL games run faster on their hardware.

With a reasonable CPU a 6600 should be able to run the game with medium detail settings at 640x480 or 800x600 a 6600 GT would be able to handle high detail at the same resolutions.

Of course if you can get anything second hand more powerful for the same price as those all the better even if it is a previous generation card.

If I remember correcty the only difference was a clock core/mem speed increase on the XT for the 9800 cards that could be flashed so you needn't flash the bios of the card just overclock it but if you want to risk it there are files and guides here and here.

The minimum specs are missing some cards in that page this is full list that shipped with the game.
