    Hi,

I live out the country in an old farmhouse. I am just wondering how can I go about getting some other channels other than the Irish channels.

There is no cable or broadband in our area.

    Thanks,

    Karen.

FTA satellite setup - around €100 self install if you shop around - can get you the BBC's, ITV's, Sky News and a number of other UK-based satellite channels free. Add a second LNB and a switch to get >100 German channels free, including MTV, Nickelodeon, D:SF (shows the FA cup, etc, in German) and more.

    Theres also Sky.

You've got practically unlimited choice if you've got a big south facing wall/garden/shed wall/field. Could even get yourself the analogue Arabic channels ;)

in this day and age FTA satellite is definitely the way to go but depending on where in ireland you are there may be alternatives namely

Freeview (only in a few places near the border/eastern seaboard)
Deflectors (can be a very cheap way of getting UK channels)
Analouge UHF from N Ireland or Wales (The days of UK channels on analouge are numbered though)
    MMDS (yuck)

    For Free channels @28E see
    http://bytelive.com/wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Free+To+Air+on+Sky
For a reasonably complete list of channels.

Go for an 80cm Dish. Total cost a shade under 200 Euro

Add about 100 Euro for a Motor. Then about twenty satellites from 42E to 50W see www.lyngsat.com Atlantic and Europe Frequencies. Click on Ku Satellite POSITION, not satellite names.

Free on 13E with some or all English: (* marks part time english)
    BBC World TV (inc Teletext)
    Arriang
    DW TV *
    Nile TV International *
    Ch33 IBA *
    Russia Today
    VOA TV
    Terranova *
Lots of POP Music / Dance channels
    TFJ *
    Pentagon Channel

    @ 19E
    CNN
    CNBC
    Bloomberg
    Euronews
    BBC World (no teletext)
    DW TV *
    Lots of Pop Video
    Eurosport in German

Also bucket loads of Arabic, Central Europe, Asian, German, French, Spanish, Polish etc. Some have occasional English, some have English subtitles etc. Sport, Films , Music etc.

Lots of Radio stations inc most of the main Short Wave English Broadcasts in perfect audio.

Deflectors are rotten quality and doomed. Analog MMDS is poor quality, it and Digital MMDS are expensive and may not last long.

If you get a Sky sub it is nearly free install, and you can cancel and get all the free stations still after a year. £21 will let you order a C4/Five card ONLY TO A UK ADDRESS, that will working any Sky Digibox

Of all the options FTA or FTV satellite is definitely best but...........

Either move the dish (a polar mount Diseqc motor is 100 Euro), or muliple LNB on one 80cm dish pointed at 19E, Sky LNB about 3" to 4" west off arm and slightly raised and 13E LNB up close to main LNB to east.

Yes, you'll also not want to be using a Sky dish or Sky box to get them with any ease ;)
