Steer clear of Win 98 and ME if possible. They are crap and crash a least a couple of time a month. Go with Windows 2000 if you can get it.

its a really old pc and the minimum memory requirements means that only win 98second or me will work!!!!
Its annoying and Ive heard about a lot of the probs accoiated with them but there all that will work!

Clean install of 98SE is your lesser of many evils. 98SE is not too bad if cared for.

98 second edition is very much malligned, true 2000 is far superior ( better than XP as far as i'm concerned )
are you sure 2000 won't run, i'd try an install anyway as it's quite robust.

stay well clear of ME worst piece of software microsoft ever wrote

You can't upgrade from 98 first to 98 second edition.
    Only Win95->Win98/WinMe.

Stay the hell away from WinME....so Win98 is your best bet.

Buy some memory. I checked for a Dell Optiplex GX1 (randomly picked) - e35 for 128MB! That would allow you to upgrade to Win2k.
Of course, Dell machines are really cheap these days <e600 for a good Pentium4, with large drive (160GB), 15" flat screen and 512MB RAM.

I have xp installed on an old 233mghz machine on 64mb ram and it works but you have to work with it a lot.

win2k will refuse to install anyway if you have less than 128mb ram, it's a built in refusal by windows.

Personally, I'd stick with what you have. 98se, which was supposed to fix the bugs in 98 but did swfa really and was worse than the original. 98se was a pain in the rear if ever there was one and I only used it for about 2months before switching back to windows95 which was way better than any version of 98 or me.

At least 95 worked - sort of lol ...

Ahh for the days of simplicity and good old msdos and 3.1 :D

If I were you, I'd go for Windows NT, the Win9x series is just too crash-prone. Unless you need the machine for (DirectX) gaming, there is no real advantage to using Win98.

My mistake. Seems you can upgrade. About $25 bucks for the cd.

Too true but I believe Norfork Nights is using a USB Ripwave modem so NT is not an option there.

Is it as easy as just clicking in some more memory... or is there much more to it than that?

I recon an upgrade to win98se will do me as the pc is just for the net, nothing else. Ps: new pc not an option at the moment!

Still can't locate an upgrade disc! not available from microsoft anymore as far as I can see!

No WinME doesn't work fine. It's bug ridden junk in the opinion of pretty much everyone else on the internet. There's no need to call people who think so idiots.

Win2k will install on 64 megs by the way... it definitely doesnt need 128 megs.

    Win98 all the way.
just use ERU to backup system settings every so often.

Haven't heard of anyone who supports windows preferring ME to 98.

Anyway if you don't have an ME license you can't install.

The real problem, as I see it, with ME was that apart from it being crash-prone and as buggy as hell in my experience, it had very high minimum system requirements compared to 98/98se for something that added relatively little in the way of new features. Personally it being slow and buggy compared with either flavour of 98 would be enough for me to avoid it.

guess i was lucky compared to everyone else so??
i thought it was fine to use.
from switching on my p.c, to when it was rdy to use in windows it usually took 5 - 7 seconds...

never got a blue screen of death or random crashes on any games or programs...

as i said, guess i was lucky so.
