I was just wondering what kind of file size I should be expecting when I convert a dvd using DivX?

I had 2 hours of a tv show (recorded using a dvd recoreder) and it turned out to be about 1gb.

    Would this be corect?

Is there better conversion programes out there?

Depends on how much you compress it... as a base 1GB for 2 hours sounds about right, but if you know what you're doing you could take it down to 700MB or so.

I just used the default settings and if I want to change it is it just a matter of changing settings in DivX?

Ye setting would need to be changed.
Depending on what software you are using there could be a setting for size?

I just download a trial copy of DivX Converter from downloads.com so must play around with it and see.

    Any better apps out there?

With a bit of tweaking it could be brought down to about 800mb I'm sure but 1gb still isn't too bad as long as it's optimal quality.

Try divx pro, compresses better then the regular version of divx.

Xvid with Gordian Knot is a pretty good choice...

any of these free or am I gona have to pay for them?

Now that I got a dvd recorder I'm gona be archiving some of my favorite shows so I reckon its worth investing but not if I dont have to.

Gordian Knot with Xvid is free.

Auto gordian knot is a better solution if you don't want to put much effort in though. Results are nearly as good. Might also be found as "AutoGK"

Indeed, just enter a size you want it to be, about 750 megs for a movie is fine.
