Dunno if this is right forum but how do you deal with spam on a forum, provided you have the IPs etc...?

    Thanks

    Depends on the forum software.

As you can see from boards.ie, dealing with spam really hasn't advanced much in the last twenty years. Good old elbow grease is the only effective way to deal with it.

You can ban IPs and IP ranges at a server level, but there's rarely any point because there are so many origin points.

What about reporting such IPs?Who do you report them do?

You don't report them. If it's your forum, most forums have the capability of blocking IPs, or a range of IPs.

If it's not your forum, but you have the IPs somehow, the forum admin can block them.

Since on a forum, you essentially provide the service of a free medium for people to use, you can't report them to their ISPs for spamming. It's not the same as email spam.

Ok, thanks for the help, it was reported to the host of the forum and they are being more helpful than expected.
It turns out a lot can be done in this case.

If the IPs being used are open proxies then you can probably find somewhere to report those.
I've also reported abusers to their ISPs in the past.

Some ISPs take a very dim view of abusers :)
