I think money went into making them ornate that may have been better spent on better electronics and hardware. Haven't played one, but for $499 I'd rather the plainest looking bass around with better parts than something that looks swish.

'Fraid I have to disagree with ya there, Doc......sometimes looks are important. As long as it's playability is good, it can always be hotrodded (better pickups, locking tuners, etc.).

For example, I'm ordering One of these Tuesday at my local Guitar Center. I'm buying it on the basis of it's looks....and I'm assuming it's playability is ok, or Paul Stanley wouldn't stand behind it. If the pickups or tuners suck, I'll just replace them eventually.

Edit: Heheh, was just reading the reviews for the Silvertone Apocalypse and stumbled on this.....maybe I'll really luck out here!

I purchased this bass mainly for collector purposes, but once I started playing it, I couldn't believe how great it sounded. The action was just right, the balance is perfect and it sounds GREAT!!! This bass is well worth the money. The design is fantastic and the red n black color gives it a nice eerie look. I am waiting for a hard shell case to come out, but the soft case is good and it fits like a glove. This is my 12th bass and it ranks in my top 4 (the top 3 are signatures!)

The thing about cheaper instruments is that the build quality is, more often than not, inconsistent and you're not guaranteed to get a nice playing one... which would play a big part in my choice were I to order from a different continent.

I've got to agree with the Doc here. You can't see what an instrument looks like on an album...

Agreed. If I pull the bass out and play it in the store and there's something off about it, I can just yell, "This is crap! Get me another one!"

And for that price, they will.
