Laptop taking ages to shut down....

Hi all, Have an Inspiron 6000 and for the last few days shutting down has become a problem. When I click on Start>Turn off computer>then the screen fades as normal, then when I click shut down it lights up again and is taking a very long time to actually turn off. Any suggestions?
