    Hi,
    I just made my first post on another site and I put a :) at the end of my post and when I went to submit it said you need 5 posts before you can use smileys. It also said before you need 5 posts before you can link to URLS. Could be a good deterrent against spammers. However, it could also be annoying for those who simply register looking for help linking to a car they want to buy etc.

    They were using: vBulletin Version 3.5.2

    :cool:

    now that's a great idea
    I'd make it more than 5 posts though, 10 or 20

    One could get 5, 10 or 20 posts in a matter of minutes in AH or TCN/Thunderdome.

    Whether or not spammers are too lazy to spend a few minutes doing so is another matter.

    Thunderdome posts don't count though I thought?

    Neither do TCN posts

    That would be good, as they would have to do it for each register.

    Yeah thats a brilliant idea. Another brilliant idea would of been putting this in feedback tbh :p

    I'd make it 5000 posts before you can use smileys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    How the hell did I manage to put it in Forums? Woops! Wow, I'd only have another 40 odd posts to go before I could use smileys if that was the case Gordon, we take these things for granted too much I think.

    What;s to stop anyone simply linking to smilies offsite?

    ravages.gif

    Or are we going to limit the use of the img tag also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,788 ✭✭✭Vikings

    Would this not increase spam though? I can see it now, new register ... 20 spam/crap posts and then the real spam with links comes through.

    The bulk of spammers get nuked before they even get to 20 posts. There's actually nothing stopping them from posting urls, they just won't be linkable. Although, you could easily add a bit of code which nuked attempts to even insert a URL in the text of the post.

    If you make it that you can't link to site until you've posted 10 posts then that'd surely stop those crappy posts that are blatent advertising.

    What if they put the links in their sig?

    Or bots

    Best idea in a long time. Make it 20 posts before you can start a new thread, add a sig or post url links. Please make this happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

    Ah now, that may be going a bit overboard. I know I've joined a good few forums simply to ask a question, I wouldn't like if I had to spam other posts with unhelpful replies in order to rack up enough posts in order to ask my question:o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

    Meh, I dunno. I think it would serve two purposes, to make the noob search the forums first for the answer they seek (there are very few new questions out there that haven't been posted before) and cut the spam and ****e out of the forums for the people who actually participate over a long term who are, in my opinion, the people who should be looked after. Twenty posts isn't a lot of forum participation really.

    Ok seriously, with the recent malware linking going on all over boards.ie the past 24 hours, I suggest this again:)

    Aye, it does make it seem a bit more pertinent.

    I sugest some of us can have powers to edit their posts, then wait for a ban.

    What malware?

    Vote ++ for this though - except the smileys part - that's just silly ;)

    Cormie has good idea shocker! :) Why did'nt an admin think of this first (unspoken subtext)?

    Mike.

    smileys are not a problem on boardsie...but linking material can be at times.

    So i wouldnt have the smilies block.

    But i support the 5 posts before you can link stuff rule.

    cant think of anyone who would come to boardsie for anything other then spam that would need to post a url in the their first five posts and simply cant wait.

    I support this. At least for the film production forum anyway.

    Is there not a feature in vB to blacklist URL's in links? Im sure there is a plugin for vB or atleast using the feature to censor the words.

    Found one

    add to functions.php
    // ###################### Start stri_replace #####################
    // Case-insensitive str_replace function found on php.net

    function stri_replace($searchFor, $replaceWith, $string, $offset = 0) {

        $lsearchFor = strtolower($searchFor);
        $lstring = strtolower($string);
        $newPos = strpos($lstring, $lsearchFor, $offset);

        if (strlen($newPos) == 0) {
            return($string);
        } else {
            $left = substr($string, 0, $newPos);
            $right = substr($string, $newPos + strlen($searchFor));
            $newStr = $left . $replaceWith . $right;
            return stri_replace($searchFor, $replaceWith, $newStr, $newPos + strlen($replaceWith));
        }
    }

    At the top of the function censortext replace the following code:
    // ###################### Start censortext #######################
    function censortext($text) {
      global $enablecensor,$censorwords,$censorword,$censorchar;

    with this:
    // ###################### Start censortext #######################
    function censortext($text) {
      global $enablecensor,$censorwords,$censorword,$censorchar;

      //start goatse hack
      $text = stri_replace("http://www.**********","http://www.oralse.cx",$text);
      $text = stri_replace("http://**********","http://oralse.cx",$text);
      //end goatse

    I can assume that you can add more between the //start goatse hack and //end goatse hack, with our offending links.
