Right, well, i fixed this problem here by reinstalling over the C drive, but now I have a new problem:

All of my old files are still there but I can't access my old user account. If I try to open the folder it tells me access is denied and the a/c isn't coming up on the welcome screen. I tried creating a new account with the same name but it just created a new folder "username.COMPUTERNAME"

    anyone got any ideas?

Can you access the folders if you log on with an administrator account

    Nope, tried that already

This may help. You can copy all the files from a corrupt account you can't access to a new one. It has been my sad duty to perform this twice with XP.

You might have tried this already, but can you take ownership of the folder from your admin account, I think there are also linux boot CD's that might help. Someone might have used these before

You need to "Take ownership" of the folder and files

Usually done through the folder properties security and permissions settings

have a google for "advanced security and permissions" if your running xp home

If your still stuck i'll dig out the technet article for you

EDIT: Ooops dinding replied while I was typing too many beers :D

yeah someone suggested that but my file system is NTFS so i think that'd be massively complicated and i don't know how to go about it either. Also, i just noticed the folder i want is 0kb >.<

    Nah, i'm running home and also, it appears what i want isn't there ;-;

It will show okb if you don't have permissions the linux disk can read ntfs, so it might be possible to copy off the data.

    Have a look at this:-

First, NTFS must be your file system, this will not work with a FAT file system. To enable "Advanced" security permissions in XP Home simply boot into safe mode, right-click any file or folder, and now you will have the "Security" tab - just as in XP Pro

Simply make your changes and reboot into normal mode.

The advanced tab is even there that will give you even more permission options such as inheritance, etc.

Oh and if you want the advanced features while logged in normally try out http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/991/

here..even easier way to do it..no messing with the reg and booting into safe mode..

open up windows explorer and go to folder options..under view scroll down to the enable simple file sharing and untick the box..easy peasy..

also try moving the folder to another partition than the one you've installed on...and then move your documents to this folder..
I reinstall about every 6 months and always do it this way...that way all my docs are safe and be easily got at..

Thanks for your help but none of these have worked. I'm just gonna forget about it and do a clean install, nearly everything important was on other partitions anyway.

I tried that Tweak before and it doesn't work in XP Home. The only thing that will work with the Home edition to enable the advanced security settings can be found at the link below. However read the page carefully.

I have used this and it work fine for me.

note - I tried the ftp link just before this post and there might be a prob this morning getting into microsoft's site.

If you are an admin you can use backup with ntbackup and then restore it. The trick is to untick the preserve security in advanced on the restore.

boot to safe mode/right click your old file/properties/advanced settings(sharing)/share the file/re-boot into normal mode/all your old files should be in your shared folder/review and save what you want to keep/delete the rest/unshare folder...
