Here it goes - 2 setups:

    3.0ghz (800fsb) Socket 478
    2.8ghz (533fsb) Socket 775

Now i realise that the 478 chip is faster, but does the socket 775 bring anything to the game that i should be aware of, or is it just a different shape hole :p ?
The rest of the setup will be identical on both machines, just the mobo and the processor would be different.

    Thanks for any help :).

    Endo.

Just make sure your MB fits whatever socket processor you get and you'll be fine.

Isn't 775 newer and faster?

Anyways about installation, I think this might help you...

there won't be much diff between them, although I reckon the 3ghz machine will probably bench a bit higher.

It really depends on the intended usage of both, the 775 may be more future proof, but probably not as Intel changes its chipsets every other day. The 2.8ghz support sse3 and may support the NX-bit, but that'll be the extent of it.

    Not as often as AMD!!

Since the Athlon 64, AMD has had 2 (3 if you count the opteron/workstation socket) different sockets, and every chipset supported every chip for that socket. This is since 2003. And now in 2006 its consolidating them all into AM2 and moving server to socket 1207.

Intel on the other hand: New chipsets for prescott + larger power requirements. New chipsets for LGA775. New chipsets for Pentium D. Now, new chipsets for Conroe, the next intel chip. Thats not even counting the changeover from willamette socket (the initial p4), or the changeover that occurred in ram due to the failure of rambus (anyone here have an SDR p4?). Even the newest chipsets don't support all older chips due to the dropping off the 400mhz bus, and even chipsets today don't support the coming soon 1333mhz bus.

    sure....
