it was great its more of a submission grappling, i got my ass kicked but feckin loved it, i didnt gas out as soon as i thought i was. some of the guys there travel from derry to antrim to train at the progressive combat mma gym. after about 15 mins rolling with a fella i got him in a head and arm joke and tapped him out, (i thought i could take on royce at this point lol) all the guys there said that my weight was a defo advantage for me as it can make guys ucomfortable on the bottom postion and that stops them thinkin of wat there gonna do to me.

so all in all a great day, i got my ass spanked but ill be back for more lol

    Well done Paddy.

You'll be triangling lamp-posts and armbarring postmen at every opportunity.

one thing concerns me though fellas, there doesnt seem to be an insructor everybody just seems to roll with each other and try out things, since i watch alot of mma i was fanilar with submissions but if was a complete novice i would be very concerned, is this normal for grappling classes??

It's normal for my grappling class!

    Paddy,
BJJ is comparitively new in Ireland in terms of martial arts. This means that essentially there's an absence of qualified coaches. One of the glories of BJJ is that you can roll with somebody and try out new things without getting beaten up. All you have to do is tap and try again!

    Hey Paddy,

One of the first things I tell new people training with me is that they'll learn most of their stuff from their peers than directly from a coach (in fact, most human learning is done this way)

Usually when I coach I'll watch my athletes roll for a few minutes, see a common flaw in their game, then spend the next 30 mins doing drills/showing techniques to correct that problem. I'm not into showing something new and exciting every single class.

When they start rolling I give them goals (for example, a beginner I explain what the aim is, and that they should just work for pins today, and if someone's on top, get them off. If they know any subs from watching vids, feel free to try them out, since they're going with someone who has more experience). What I notice is that no matter how experienced the guys are, they always talk about their roll the second it's over, how they got caught, what they did, etc. If a problem arises then they call me over to offer input.

    Hope that helps,
    Colm

Colm' style of coaching highlighted above is deadly. I make a point of rolling with him when ever I can (final year in college so not for ages) but usually correcting the flaw in your game makes a vast difference to your game, far more than a new move or something.

    Peace

    that sounds like great fun!

I am dying to learn some BJJ stuff.

I got a book but its real hard to figure BJJ out from a book.

    shall buy some DVDs soon!
