Burning .avis to DVD sync problem

Hey wise ones, can ye help me please! :)

I have noticed that sometimes when I burn .avi or .mpeg files to DVD (i.e. convert them to an actual DVD), the sound seems to go out of sync?

Is there any way of solving this or why would it be happening? It's a bit annoying watching it when the sound is a few seconds delayed.

Would it be the DVDs or what? The files work fine on my own computer, they are always perfect, it's just when I convert them that the problem happens.

By the way, I'm using Nero 7 Premium => I bought it as well, only in January, so it's an official copy, so shouldn't really be causing this. Could it be the DVDs I'm using are of poor quality?

Thanks so much everyone, any help at all is very much appreciated :)

It's probably to do with the encoding of the original file - If the audio portion is encoded as VBR, it will cause problems (usually) when you re-encode.
Try extracting the audio from the .avi, re-encoding it as CBR then put it back together with the video as a new file in the correct format for DVD.
I personally use Virtualdubmod to do this, but I'm sure there's other programs out there too (I haven't had a need to do this in a few months, so I'm probably a bit out of touch)

I can never get subtitles to work properly. Virtualdub always tells me to rencode the audio, but its such a pile of crap to have to do. There should be an easier way to synch properly.

Basically I say nero = crap. at least when burning dvds.. sure it makes it easy as pie but it f*cks up somewhere in the process of convreting to mpeg2 then dvd.

I just use diko and nero to burn the .iso file.
Diko is available in the essential software thread.
its not too hard to use... its not as simple as nero but your far far less likely to get the synch problem.

Edit: diko basically converts your .avi files to mpeg 2. you then create a menu using dvd styler. it then creates a .iso file. you buring said .iso file to nero et voila, your dvd.

I cant say I know the exact cause but "I think" its usually to do with the source material and the framerate it runs at along with the conversion to a PAL DVD is the cause of the sync problems.

    PAL works at 25fps
    NTSC works at 29fps
XviD TV shows mostly encoded at 23-24fps

No easy solution some programs are better than others at re-encoding material try the demo version of ConvertXToDVD its what I use and so far havent had any troubles, at least with the demo you'll know if it works on your files or not.
