Dangerous Waters is sitting out on Steam for download at something like 30-32 euros depending on the exchange rate. I was wondering if anyone on here has it and if its worth the purchase price/download?

Im more interested in the strategic mission planning aspect thats mentioned rather than actually running any particular boat - I have Silent Hunter 3 for that. If anyone has the game, can they say whether my impression of whats meant by strategic mission planning (i.e. youre not commanding any particular boat, but rather all the boats on the mission) is right or have I got the wrong end of the stick entirely and is it similar to SH3, youre commanding one particular boat?

Looks quite interesting. I'd buy it for the hell of it if I had room on my HD.

I don't know if you've made a decision yet on it, but I was a late arrival to DW, and I downloaded it.

It was certainly different to any other game I'd ever bought, but I'd only really recommend it if you're not too pushed about how much value you're going to get for your thirty quid. It's a very hit-or-miss deal. If I were to pick any two words to describe it, they would be 'compromise' and 'unpolished'

It sortof sits in between proper sims like Silent Hunter III and strategic games like Harpoon. (Which reminds me, I really must take a look at H3). As a result, it really doesn't do either quite as well. For example, the aviation side with the P-3 an SH-60 remind me rather of a board game like chess or memory than something giving you a thrill of hunting a submarine. The sub/FFG sims are a bit better, but also strike me a lot like some shareware games I had back in the day. When looking at the different submarines, they seem to be almost identical, except the interfaces are flashier on the more modern boats.

The strategic side of it is pretty much lifted from Jane's Fleet Command, which I also have, except you have only control over your own platform. If that one platform is the SH-60, you don't get control over the FFG which you lauched from. Similarly, if you're manning the FFG, you don't really get to control the SH-60. You can't jump from one platform to the other in the game. It can be frustrating at times.

As to the 'unpolished' comment, think Falcon 4.0. It's a great start, but smacks very much of having been forced to be released before it was ready, and thus reliant on user-created packs to fix a lot of those "Doh! Why didn't they do this!?" issues, and even at that it didn't get all of them.

I'd not give it more than seven out of ten. It has some very unique features which can only be seen in this game (If you thought that getting a firing solution in Silent Hunter III was hard, it's extremely hard to get one by sonar only in DW), but after I paid the cash and downloaded it, I just didn't get the impression that it was money well spent. I'm just cursing whoever for cancelling Harpoon 4.

    NTM

No, I decided to wait and see - wisely as it turns out.

I think though I might be investing the money I "saved" into Dropteam, which looks like a tarted up sci-fi vehicles only Combat Mission, which isnt so surprising given its Battlefront. Still fooling about with the demo before I take the plunge but Im tempted, though so far my main experience has been finding out why its a bad idea to call down a dropship near AA turrets.
