How can an application I downloaded "know" that I have downloaded a version of it before?

There's a free trial version of an app available online but it has a time limit. When the time limit runs out, obviously the owners want you to buy the full version, which I have done, but I tried to download the trial version again and it wont work because I've already used my alloted time. How does it know?

There's no windows registry on a Mac :D. Are you sure you are just downloading it, and not not installing it from the site itself? Make sure you are downloading it into a different folder and quit all active applications, if any are running.

no, thanks for that, i'm sure i'm downloading it. Then it installs and when I try to run it a window pops up telling me i've got "0.0 hours of the demo left".

So i assumed i could start again and download the demo and get another 8 hours, but no.?!?!

probably writes an invisible, tiny text file somewhere on your filesystem. hard to find unless you know what you're looking for. can't help other than that, sorry. Do you know Terminal? You could brushing up on your unix commands...

    whats the app?

There are some apps that will actually trace any change/copy/delete of any file in your mac everytime you run, allowing you to know what an app does when it runs or install, very handy sometimes ;)

The application is Sketchup, and sorry for being an idiot Edunon, but I don't get your post - I'm not particularly computer literate - could you elaborate please?

    Have a look at Desinstaler
and fseventer and see if they can do it for you.

    fseventer is quite impresive

Two things you might try 1st clear all plist files relating to the app from your preferences folder and application support folder. 2nd temporarily set your clock/time back to before you downloaded it before, sometimes that works. 1st one is more likely to succeed, worked for me on lots of apps. 3rd set up a different user name.
