Another dual core question...

Ok, I have a 3700+, but I've found myself wanting to do multiple, compute intensive tasks a bit more recently, mostly because I got a psp.

How would the 3800+ x2 compare to the 3700+ for game playing (single threaded)? (or even just general computing). Would there be a substantial drop in performance?

Also, would (for example) video processing in the background while playing a game be a problem?

Good article. Not exactly what I was looking for. I did find a more "apples to apples" comparisson here. I'd (roughly) expect a 20% hit in single threaded games, and a 40% benefit in multi-threaded ones. Hmmmm.

Still no official word on whether UT2007 will be multi-threaded.

The Unreal Engine 3.0 is multi-threaded however whatever performance benefits come out of that remain to be seen.

    [UT 2007 uses UE 3.0]

Ah, dual core will make a big difference in that case. A 3800+ x2 would seriously outrun a 3700+ in a multi-threaded race.

You sure about UE3 being multi-threaded? Got linkage?

I've read it numerous places... no link-age, but seen it all over the place. It's a next-gen engine, it'd be madness for it not to be multi-threaded.

Would you feel comfortable overclocking the 3800+; even just a mild overclock? If so there is no reason that single threaded games/tasks would take a hit.

    Lol, sounds so psychotherapistic.
"Would you feel comfortable being close to the spiders Mary?"

    Plus a new word..

Wizzard: Yeah, I probably wouldn't mind.

I think that's made up my mind for me. My mate's in the US and coming home soon. All told I can have the 3800+ x2 for 230 odd euro. My 3700+ has hardly been used (and never overclocked), so I'd say I can get 190+ for it.

40 euro for a new dual core.

    *MMMmmmmmm*
