Logitech G5 vs Mx518

I'm wanting to buy a mouse and I've narrowed the search down to either the Logitech G5 or the MX518, I know the G5 is the latest and greatest (and the more expensive option), but it also loses one thumb button on the left. I'd like to know has the G5 got anything magnificent that the MX518 hasn't? Is laser that much better than optical? 2000dpi over 1600dpi....noticable? I'd basically like to know if its worth the money going for the G5, or should I stick to the MX518 and save that extra bit of money for a new game.

I've searched for reviews and comparisons on the net, but all I could find were Logitech mice being compared to Razer.

    I play with MX310 - 800dpi, perfectly fine!

Extra thumb button > laser engine.

And sensitivity increase is useless too, I'd get MX510 if I was you tbh, it's engine is quite enough, and atleast you can use buttons above and below the wheel as scrolls.(without drivers they function as "one line" scroll)

Thanks for that, needed a bit of input. I was leaning more towards the mx518 anyway, I think I'll go for that.

One more question, I have a fairly old microsoft optical intellimouse, will I notice much of a difference? is it noticable when not playing games?

I've been using the 518 for almost a year now. It's a great mouse, I don't think the laser's are worth the extra money to be honest.

I have the G5 and wouldn't trade it for anything. The sensitivity buttons are excellent for gaming when switching between running and sniping for example - especially when flying in BF2.

It has 8 buttons - anyone who wants more has too many fingers on one hand.

    Highly recommended.

I was thinking of switching to the G7 (Wireless version) But I hear it only has a battery time of a couple of days before recharging.

I currently have the MX1000 which suffers the laser turn on/off lag.

Actually good point, does the G5 suffer from that lag like the MX1000?

not at all - this mouse is a pure gaming mouse. Built for it. Even down to the weight cartridge that goes in to adjust the weight of the mouse depending on your preferences.

But to answer your question no - i've never noticed any lag at all. Its extremely responsive.

the G5 is the best mouse i have ever played with, my accuracy has become deadly and i owe it all to this mouse!

on another note, i was looking for a cheap mouse to game with my laptop and found this, which turned out to be a surprise, not bad for 20yoyo. you can switch between 800 and 1600dpi

The battery time is only a couple of days, but it comes with two of them, so you leave one in the dock charging (think it's roughly 6 hours on slow mode, 1 on fast) while you use the other. Changing batteries only takes a second.

Neither the G5 or the G7 suffer from lag, and both benefit hugely from increased USB reporting speeds, allowing you to use the full DPI settings without skipping. (as mentioned already, swithcing DPI on the fly is really cool too)

Cool. In the MX1000 there was a problem that when you lifted the mouse off the mat the laser switched off I presume to stop people burning holes in their head or something equally terrible.

Anyway when you put the mouse back down it took a coupla microseconds to reactivate the laser resulting in a lag/no response noticable only in FPS gaming. If the G7 is free of this I might get it when I upgrade my pc insides in a couple of weeks.

Logitech's response to why they excluded the forward button, was that the gamers were constantly missing/mixing the forward and back buttons, like they could not map the same function to both buttons?

In reality what I think it is, is that one of the chips that handles the button control, can't handle most than 8 buttons, they did not bother ordering a new one so they just sucrificed 1 button, forward got dropped, I'm not sure about that it's just a theory. ;)

And honestly a good mouse won't make you a better gamer, if you suck with your old mouse you'll suck with your new one too.

IMHO the reason why most of the users notice "improvement" is that, they want to justify their purchase and when you have a new mouse, you concentrate more on aiming better ;)

Oh btw, from now on MX518 is known as G3

i use the two thumb buttons for going back and forward between pages when browsing and using explorer and also for going through pics in windows picture and fax viewer, also in nearly every game i play i have both thumb buttons asigned to some action, like in cs it's stopsound and ventrilo, in q3 its lg and gl, in ut its rl and shock, so yeah i think the extra button gives a far better advantage than the extra sensitivity

It's a matter of taste really, I don't even use the one thumb button, or the left/right scroll wheel buttons.

I've certainly never noticed it, or seen it mentioned in reviews or their support forums. The laser does seem to switch off if you lift it up fully (even though it's supposed to be safe anyway), but I've never noticed any lag putting it back down.

Had a Dual Optical before they were popular, have an MX518 now. Bought it for the colour. It's grand.
