i've asked this before but didn't really get an answer.

whenever i install xp sp2 my graphics card starts to crash every ten minutes. i don't know what part of sp2 does it, just that it starts once its installed. these are my specs:

    asus a7v8x-mx motherboard
    ati radeon 9800 pro graphics
    amd athlon xp 2800+
    2*512mb pc 2700 ddr sdram
    350 watt cheiftech psu
    windows xp sp1 (unfortunately)

everything is fully updated. i'm wondering if anyone else has had the problem and how they managed to sort it

What driver do you have for your gfx card?
ATI released a driver for that card a while ago that screwed up displays something awful. Try the latest driver and see

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 pro myself and have had no problems with sp2

Give the omega drivers a bash, they are good :)

i've tried the omega drivers. i've tried every driver i can find. i've contacted ati about it and they couldn't do anything. its annoying me at this point

a new development. it didn't happen for a few days until i watched some videos and it started then. but the weird thing is that it only happens when i use media player classic. vlc doesn't have the same problem. any ideas?

MPC might use different rendering techniques then VLC does? And so calls on a different part of your video drivers? Guessing here tbh.

another new development, it still happens with vlc, just took longer. trying it out with my onboard gfx now to see if that makes a difference

Have you reapplied your motherboard/chipset drivers after applying SP2?

If I'm not mistaken he used a slipstreamed CD.

Try updateing your motherboards chipset drivers, it's probably more of an AGP port/bus problem.

    (Slipstreamed) you're right

But slipstreamed with what software? (Props. for integrating what you need, but the fact it is slipstreamed does not mean it has all the correct software integrated). Anyway get the latest VIA 4in1 drivers for XP and install those too (actually I think they recommend an older version for that chipset but you'll find it all with a quick google).

    Edit:

At least it's down to definitly being related to the graphics card / port now. Borrow a card off someone and try that in it?

Slipstreamed to include SP2 and take away some of the options during the install process. There's no drivers beyond what comes with windows on it. I gave him the cd.

Ah, I thought you were implying he had them already included on that CD. Makes it clearer.

Yeh, my comment was in relation to SP2 being slipstreamed into it, so there was no need to "reinstall" drivers "after" SP2.

i solved the problem the only way possible. i reinstalled without sp2. apparently its an ongoing conflict between ati cards and via chipsets. neither company feels particualrly bothered with fixing it so i'll just avoid sp2 until i get a new mobo
