RAM question

    Dell inspiron laptop (1100)

Anyway, wouldnt boot up so I read about a bit on the web and tried changing the RAM from one dimm slot to the other, and it booted up fine.

Is it ok to have the RAM in this other dimm slot and is it inevitable that the same future is in store for the dimm slot being used now?

Really havent a clue about this stuff, is the motherboard just f'd ?

Since it's working fine in it, it'll probably be OK. Some motherboards can't have RAM in the 2nd slot if there's none in the 1st, but most should be fine.

It might be an indication of a more serious problem though, like a failing motherboard perhaps.

Yes its working fine, but the "failing motherboard" suggestion makes sense. I guess waiting for the second to go is the way to go :)

It may be that the Ram wasn't seated properly in the first slot or that the contacts had become slightly corroded. Sometimes just removing and pushing the Ram back in a couple of times would clean the contacts and make it work again.
Try doing this with the Ram in the original slot and it might work (and renew your confidence in the machine too)
A little rub along the contacts with a pencil rubber helps too.
