Memory problem.

I've a PIII 600Mhz. The BIOS is only seeing half the installed memory. I've tried a 512mb PC100 DIMM, BIOS reports only 256. Tried a 256 PC133 and the BIOS only reports 128. Would there be something I need to change is the BIOS? Any other ideas?...

erm i think it has something to do with the jumpers on your motherboard that you have to switch. I think they are near the memory modules

    Might only support 256

Yeah but why would it then show the 256 module as 128?

Can't see any jumpers near the memory slots. What might they be labelled as if they're somewhere else on the board?

I put in 2x512 and this comes up as only 512.

Your machine may only accept only single-banked memory. If you have installed dual-banked, the computer will read only half the memory on the module.

Is single-banked where the memory is on one side of the stick only? The 256 that I have is like this... but is only coming up as 128...

Yeah single bank is one side only.

That's strange problem. If there are no jumpers, there maybe settings in the BIOS or the BIOS may need updating.

Another thing I was thinking, it maybe that the mainboard can only handle a certain capacity on each slot. Mind you it depends on old the board is and it would want to be pretty old not to ID 512DIMMS in each slot.

I've just put in a 128 and it's coming up correct

what is the make and model of the mainboard?

    It's a Chaintech 6BTM0

It looks like bad news on the 512 DIMMS and on the 256 for that matter.

It seems that this board has four slots each of which can only support 128 DIMMS.

Check out the following link for the board manual:

    http://www.chaintech.com.tw:8008/support/manuals.htm

Edit = Are you sure you have the right model number?

Was just at the chaintech site.. thanks for the direct link :) Strange how it will take the bigger DIMMS but only use half

On first glance at the manual, it says ECC compatability (not that I know what that means) but I noticed the bios is set to non ecc... would changing that make any difference

Yeah, that's the board alright... from the manual.

Put in 4x128 and got the 512. Will leave it at that. Thanks for the time and help HSo.

To be honest I'm not sure about the ECC, you could try setting it. Some DIMMS come with extra chips for error correction and some boards insist on it being enabled.

See if you can get an update for the BIOS from the Chaintech site. This can solve those kinds of problems on occasion, where a board's spec to handle different CPUs and mem can be changed.

The reason I asked about the model number is that the manual specifies a much lower CPU than what you quoted earlier.

The physical size of a DIMM makes no difference, if I have understood your comment correctly about the board taking the larger DIMM.

I have seen machines reject memory simply because it didn't like a particular model, Dell machines are very particular for example.
