    Hi,

Was just going through my 'odds and ends' box and came across a few bits and pieces that I had forgotten about, and then some that I never really knew much about in the first place. Below are some of the 'forgotten' items:

    Picture019.jpg

I know what some of them are, but the few below I know little or nothing about and hope someone here might know :D

    Ok, first off, these culprits....
    Picture010.jpg
I 'think' the first one is a WW2 Belgian resistance medal, but I'm not sure. The other two though?

The middle one reads: "Presented by Sir Herbert Raphael Bart. M.P." And then at the bottom "Crowned 1911".

The last one reads: "Coronation 1902"

    Reverse:
    Picture013.jpg

Onto these, I assume the last two are religious medals of some sort, but the first one is dedicated to "the centenery of Robert Burns -1896-" and on the reverse reads "A mans a man for a'that" and "Should auld acquintance be forgot"
    Picture011.jpg

This one, is American and I assume some form of an Irish connection with the green and the shamrock. The only lettering on it is: 69 NYG.
    Picture015.jpg

Any idea what this one is for?
    Picture018.jpg

Any ideas or info I'd be glad to hear!

    Cheers,

    CroppyBoy1798

Cool, thanks for the help Smileygal. Thats the 'fighting Irish' badge mystery solved, yes ;) . As for the other medals, I wasnt able to locate them yet, they cant be too important anyway.

Franknfurter, I doubth I'll be parting with any of them just yet, have to find out what they are first, perhaps they're super rare! :D ....or maybe not.

While I'm on the topic of medals, heres three I got earlier this week....

    Picture083.jpg

They are the '1914-15 Star', 'War Medal' and 'Victory Medal' to a Pte R Lockyer of the Scots Guards.

    Thanks,

Glad to be of help. I learnt something too.

They look in good nick. do you collect a lot of them?

Sad that so many old guys have had to sell their medals/family don't value them.

I was given some a few years ago and was honoured to be given them.

Thanks again smileygal, I'll give that link a go now, looks very interesting ;) .

I havent really got many medals, nor would I really collect them, I mainly try to pick up anything militaria related ranging from 1798 to WW2, but at the moment my interest is in WW1, it could be back to 1798 next week :D .

But yes, I agree, it is very sad when you go to e-bay or the likes and you see all the medals, and whats worse, death cards and death plaques all being flogged now for the sake of money :(

Here's one that I got not too long ago... and the buyer assured me that it was an unissued medal!

Less that 20 years old, so it's still in good shape. Not worth much now, but maybe in a few years it'll be worth something.

Actually, I don't have a picture of the actual medal, but this is what it looks like:

Not a bad looking medal Odaise Gaelach, it looks like a Soviet or Eastern Europen medal, cant say I know much if anything about them. Do you know what it would have been issued for?

Well done and sure, over the years it will be more collectable.

Medals like this were issued to the liquidators in the Chernobyl disaster. The Russian around the rim says "For participation in overcoming the catastrophie" and the three initials are "ChNPP".

After the Soviet Union broke up there was a stockpile of these medals left unissued. So I decided to get one.

    Croppy Boy,

Have solved the New York Medal Mystery - a bit of surprise actually!

Its the Department of Mental Hygiene!!what a name

1926: The New York State Department of Mental Hygiene (DMH) was created in the wake of the 1925 constitutional reorganization of state government.
1927: The New York State Mental Hygiene Law is enacted. The DMH is given almost all responsibility for the care and treatment of the mentally ill, the developmentally disabled, and epileptics.

    Here's the logo match:

Feel like Miss Marple now lol

    Smileygal you're a star! ;) , well done.

The Department of Mental Hygiene eh, I would never have guessed it! I dont even know what that is, or heard of it before, jeez, I'll have to look it up so. It's not actually mine, but came into my posession through a neighbour who passed away a number of years back, he had links with America so after that god only know.

Thanks again for the great detective work :)

Ok detective.....heres one for you :D

I have a WW2 Iron Cross 2nd class that I bought a number of years back when I was young and a bit naiive. I'm starting to think now that it might be a fake. Would you know how to tell a fake from a genuine article?

to be honest, I wouldn't! But would look strongly at the edges and back for any scratches or buffed edges from being handled with affection.

Other than that if you had a definite real one, maybe compare weight?

There's probably someone on the net somewhere who would know!!

    Hope you weren't ripped off!

There is a militaria & living history fair in Waterford, at the start of June. If you are into that sort of stuff, it's a wonderful day out. Everything from Kubelwagens to Gallowglass. See http://tinyurl.com/mtt4o for more info.

And plenty of trays of misc. medals, of course.
