Broadband Dish

Not sure if this is the right place but just would like some advice.

A friend of mine has been approached by a broadband company. They are looking to put a dish (roughly about 2 meters) on his roof to cover ie access for the area. As way of compensation they are giving him a cash fee ( a few hundred) and free broadband.

Is this the norm? Has anyone had the same done? Should he get more? Are there any other factors that he may have to consider?

    Thanks in advance

EDIT: Actually just realised the property section was probably the best place for this.

It sounds like your friends area is after getting one of those Sat-uplinked community broadband schemes and it also sounds like they either have no community centre or that the community centre won't allow the dish to be place there or else they may be faced the wrong way for the satellite signal. Those schemes are a useful way for to bring broadband to a community but they are the worst sort of schemes going as there is massive delay of about 500 to 600milliseconds ping which will make the entire thing useless for gaming, voip, P2P etc. due to the latency. Also those two-way dishes are not good for the health, They emit a fair bit of radiation in the way of radio waves and if your friend has had health scares in the past e.g. Cancer or has a history of it in the family then it might be dodgy. If he can locate the dish down the garden or if there is an attic between the dish and his living space then it shouldn't be too bad. As for the free broadband and the bung of cash then yeah go for it, especially if there no other option available for the community. What a waste of money to be doing satellite fed Community group broadband schemes in this day and age, They are okay for the 3rd world India and places like that but not here  My community is going down the County And Group broadband scheme and we are aiming to get Eircom to enable the exchange for ADSL for the place.
