    Have an old laptop
    PII 366 with 256Mb Ram
which is in dire need of a rebuild.
Which Windows OS would people recommend for this machine?

depends on what you want to do with it. It will run XP\2k, but 98 will run the best. Aside from the CPU & RAM constraints 2k & XP are much more demanding in terms of HD performance than 98, this is where you will see a fair bottleneck in the system. Although a copy of kerio would be a good idea if running 98. Support ie updates for 98 stop in june of this year or therabouts.

Also, XP SP1 is less ram hungry than SP2 due to the security centre, etc etc. If you decide to run XP, run Home as the extra uneeded services in Pro will just eat up resources.

My final answer, unless I have apps that must run on XP\2k id run 98. It's quick 'n' dirty, the way like it!

    Or..... Linux with fluxbox ;)

That comp should be able to run Win2000 fairly well.

Forget about Win9X as it can be VERY unstable depending on your hardware config.

Win2000 also had built in mass storage drivers so USB Keys/HDD's will work straight away!

I'm running full KDE on a Celeron 333 with no real probs (Although it has got 192 Megs of RAM)

I agree with ZUMA go with W2K it will have a lot more drivers built in and eliminate the hassel of trying to find them.

    Thanks for all the replies.
It is only really needed to run some flavour of office and maybe some sort of web browser. I was sort of leaning towards 98 but I think I will go with w2k based on this advice. Could user firefox too.

What OS came with the laptop ?

Otherwise you'd have to fork out for a legit license for windows which would be about what the laptop is worth , same for office - the full RRP is more than the laptop costs. Openoffice and firefox are free but are memory hogs so if running 2k you might try to get some RAM, especially compared to the license cost
