    Hi,

Would it be possible to import a classic which has no documentation ?
Would I have to chase it up on the other side?
Anyone any experience of this ?
    Thanks

You'd have to ring the VRT office about that one, because with no documentation proving that it was over 30 years would be...er...impossible. WHy dosn't whatever it is (what is it?) have any documentation? There must be a number somewhere on the vehicle that can be traced, unless it was a racing car or something?

What I've been told (by the VRO), and I plan on testing this in the next few months, is that I can register my land rover which I basically bought as scrap and rebuilt.

I do have a chassis number and from that was able to purchase a cert from british motor heritage showing the build date of my landy.

they basically just said to bring it in with the cert, there will probably have to be some checks done in the background or something, but they said it can be done

don't know the details exactly yet, not sure if the DVLA would be able to furnish me with any info based on chassis no

It is possible, but not easy. If you have a chassis number it helps because often you can determine date of manufacture from that, depending on the make/model. But without paperwork it can be difficult, because you will have to be able to prove the car would legally be yours to own.

Johnboy, you seem to have done your homework, and you have paperwork to prove a certain date of manufacture. It won't be easy and they will sit on it and deliberate, but I would say it will work.

My experience over the past years have been that in one case I tried to bring in a car that didnt have the original paperwork, because it had been seized by the Italian police with no papers, which was consequently sold after the legal proceedings had been dealt with, to recoup some of the money I guess, but they didnt want anyone to come out with the original paperwork at a later stage, so they had removed the chassis numbers on the car (!!) and provided some documents to describe why and what happened to the car. Problem was made worse in that the car was from 1972 and it was 2003 !!! so it was crucial for me to prove it was in fact a 72 car and not a 73, to avoid being slapped for VRT.

I must say, it was a struggle and it took 4 weeks but we finally managed to get a registration for it :-) but let's just say, I won't be doin that again.
