Spitfire 1500 differential shims. Help!

    1975 Spitfire 1500 with rebuilt differential. Previous owner in England had an engineering works. Diff was stripped and checked to try to eliminate a knocking noise. He had "shims" ground down to give a little play as he thought the general fit was too tight. (Post purchase the knocking was traced to the UJs.)

    There is now some whine at some speeds, especially on overrun and we suspect that resetting the shim clearances would help.

    Can anyone recommend someone, preferably in North Dublin, who knows their way round a spit diff and who could check/reset shims. We know there are several areas in the diff where shims are used. We don't know which were altered.

    Help/advice appreciated.

    Knocking UJ's are weel known on Spitfires !

    Try the Triumph Club here in Ireland or try one of the GearBox repair centres such as M&A Transmissions in Dublin !

    The key to repairing a diff succesfully is'nt merely about acheiving the correct backlash but more importantly setting up the correct preload tension on the bearings. You will need someone who has the proper equipment, a torque tensioner or spring balance.
