You say that as if it explains smoething.

I'm not very clear on this myself, but perhaps someone else can correct my assumptions. When you ask boards for a page, a server will constuct the page and send it to you. These servers are given names for convenience. There was a server called Muppet, but it died, which resulted, among other things, in the loss of the search function for some time. The server pie is still there. There are four servers at the moment. See the bottom of this page for (a little) more. connecting to pie.boards.ie will direct you to a different server (it has a different IP address). connecting to somethingstupid.boards.ie will redirect you to statler.boards.ie. I don't know what the advantage of this is. Maybe it bypasses the load balancing stuff that is in place, or maybe it's just a faster server, or maybe it's just the one which has all the vB software and database on it. I've wondered for a while. Maybe someone else can clear it up.

www is eratic for me too.

Sometimes it flies in but more than half the time it hangs or times out.

Most visitors will be using www so what evers causing that, it would be important to fix it.

There are things called catchall "catch all" address. You could put in "a-little-teapot-short-and-stout" and it could work.

Same applies for certain email addresses.

yeah i can only imagine that since www is the main gateway, that the other server names possibly bypasses the load balancer.

The Database is more than likely on one of the servers with a different IP address as i would assume backups also and with a different IP address again.

Regi would be best to explain everything.

    Example

    iamabigelepahantthateatsserversforbreakfast@boards.ie

Id assume its if www.boards.ie is down you try pie, different server ;)

Is there a limit on the subdomain length?

    For example: http://aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.boards.ie/
Doesn't work, Firefox says there is a problem loading the page

Can this be done by setting the 404 page to redirect to the main page? Is that is what is happening here?

    http://youcantypewhateveryouwanthere.itdoesntmatterandicantrememberwhynot.butithassomethingtodowiththeinternetintheoldendays.boards.ie

I note that that address is a bit slow though.

Except, you can't write http://members.boards.ie, because that's a separate address*.

*There may also be other words that don't work
