Right, what the fcuk is that, I hear you say. WELL!

The SU are updating the consitution because it written back in 1994 and its WELL outdated. They're changing and re-arranging the offical titles and roles and such. The only things of importance, in my opinion, that are even worth having a debate about are

    o Accomodation officer.
    o Polling stations open longer.
    o Roles changing.

So, accom officer is someone who can liase with students who have problems, whether on campus or off campus accomodation. The only problem I had with this is that the SU want it to be someone who is a Class Rep. I think it should be open to all people. And I said that, and they more or less agree too.

Polling stations. Some people are part time, some are on intra and others are doing postgrads etc etc. So its difficult for them to vote on the alloted opening times. So, in this amendment they will make it so that one one of the two days that the voting happens, tehy have to stay open til 8, so other people can come in and vote.

I don't really think this is required, we have a low turn out as it is! BUt then, I guess it could be argued that the turn out will be higher if peopel can come and vote. I just have a hard time imagining some ofmy mates coming from intra in town/dublin back to dcu to vote!

Roles Changing. I'm all for this. They're changing ::

o Womens officer to Equality officer
o Welfare officer to Campaigns and Information Officer
o Education office to Education adn Welfare

Equality officer is fine, the title Wimmins is a bit outdated at this stage. And according to the SU the title changes regard welfare and education are very appropriate as that is what their roles actually entail!

They had a meeting tonight about this. They really want the students input on this issue. They represent us so they want to know what we think. They have to have another meeting with students before they can do anything offical, so we have a chance to share then!

The one thing that I guess kinda sucks, and what makes the meeting so crucial is that we only get to vote on the consitution as a whole. We don't get the oppertunity to vote on seperate issues because there is far too much involved [a twenty somethign page document]. So if we have a problem, we need to address it THERE before it comes to voting...!

I will post up when the meeting is on, most likely we'll get an all students mail either way. What do you guys think about it?

They definitely need someone to do something about that shambles that is more often referred to as "res".

They're damn right tbh, I've mentioned the Womens Officer title to people before and I havn't met anyone who felt differently regarding the proposed change.

Polling Stations should be open longer alright, no two ways about it.

Indeedy, but my main problem would be the effectiveness of a Res Officer seening that Res is run by a private company. On the other hand it is a step in the right direction so I'd be in favour of that too.

Whats most annoying is this block voting with regard to the changes as a whole. Now while I havnt read up on the proposed changes yet I would be very put off voting for it either way if I was forced to vote for a change that I didnt agree with just because I wanted another change to be passed.

We tried to change it last year - unsuccessfully

what we also tried to do was allow voting through portal pages to facilitate those on intra and nurses on placement.

Ah yes I was going to suggest the Portal Page issue also, could be a good one but god forbid we'd have another Electronic Voting scandal of our very own...:D
