I keep getting a bubble in the task bar saying windows virtual memory is too low. What does this mean? Has it to do with insufficient ram or is it a lack of memory on the hard drive. What if anything should I do to rectify this problem.

    Cheers

The virtual memory is the space your computer uses when it runs short of RAM memory. how much virtual memory have you got at the moment? Right click My Computer, then Properties-> Advanced->Settings (under Performance)->Advanced and then finally Change (under Virtual Memory) There it will show you how much you are using. However if you dont know too much about it, its best to let Windows set the amount you need.

Windows swaps memory to hardisk space, when ur running out of ram real memory, for win xp its better,to have 512meg ram, or 1gig if you are burning dvds, playing doom 3, battlefied2 etc, ie if u are running alot of processes ,or programs at same time u have to run some data in virtual memory ie hard disk space. If it happens alot u may need to get 512meg ram, installed in your pc,to run windows at top speed.press cntrl alt del to bring up task manager ,get info on system cache, memory, and sys performance graphs.

Set the virtual memory to 1&1/2 times yor amount of ram, if this isnt increasing it from where it is already....

Buy more ram and do the same

Yes, it sounds like you need more memory if you get that box a lot.

You can get away with 128MB RAM with WinXP but you won't be able to do much, particularly wrt gaming.

Best thing is to go inside your comp, find the existing RAM, look on it for a label that says PC(something) in my case PC2100  in your case you're probably using PC2700 ATM. Get more memory to match what you've already got.

BTW if you have to replace the RAM completely, don't go for specialised ram (such as custom for a Dell or whatever) as it's a bit of a rip off, I remember when I didn't have a clue what RAM to buy, I asked Peats ppl and they said I needed some custom stuff, bought their generic stuff instead half the price, but six months later the original (Dell) stick went bust and had to be replaced, at that point I siezed the opportunity to increase RAM volume substantially again with a generic upgrade.

Anyways after you add RAM your computer should perform a lot better because Windows and your software won't need to access the HDD nearly as much. Especially when you're playing games.
