Thats a great clip! Inspiring to train harder!

What camp does he train out of?

There is no doubt, Muay Thai is best stand up art.
The training methods are miles ahead of anything else.
think MT training Vs Years of going up and down a floor
striking air. ( I know cause I was in MA about 2 years before
I ever seen a punch bag or focus mitt).

    HI,

I still hate southpaws. Excellent fighter, he is fighting on a show in UK in April or thereabouts, some UK lad in for a mauling. Johmod on same show also. That would be one to get over to.

    PK.

Muay Thai does seem to be a very, very good art and one I have always respected. When I started Wing Tsun in 1993 it was a toss up between MT and WT and because of logistics I ended up doing the latter. I cannot comment too much as I have never done it but when my final, final college exams are over in May I would like to drop out either to the new venue in Tallaght or the Bridgestone gym to try it out.

So here is a question for those that know about it. What is it that makes it so good? Is it the art itself (tactics/strategy) or the training methods of implementing the art (fitness/sparring/conditioning)?

Constructive answers/suggestions/comments would be appreciated. ;)

    Regards,

    Michael O'Leary

i'm pretty sure it' the pipe music that makes it badass.

imho it boils down to Training Methods - of course their technique is fantastic, but without effective training methods technique alone would not mean much

Timing, Motion and Progressive resistance (Energy) - right click, save as for video on what i mean by this Training Method (which is of course not exclusive to SBG, just i think its explained well here)

I am no MT expert. I am doing in, close to 1 year now (but I have many years kickboxing before that, so I picked it up easy).

What I like about it is the following...

MT gives you hard training on 4 major weapons, punch, elbow, knee, and kick, and standing clinch work. and the techniques are simple to learn.

for real self defence it is the perfect compliment. For example I seen 2 weeks ago someones head split open (about 14 stitches) with an elbow, in an MT match. and that sends home to me for example how effective and elbow is for self defence. the kicks are simple. for example I watched a Thai champ (something to do with Thai K1 he was) blasting right cross and right roundhouse over and over for an hour. Just one kick, into a heavy bag, and combos on the pad man full out. now comepare that to spending an hour doing many different techniques into the fresh air.

The training methods and conditioning is outstanding. and practical. working full out with a good pad man and him pushing you ( Thanks Mr Clint!!!) is an amazing training method. working hard rounds on rock hard bags is excellent for conditining. of course sit ups and running too!

So you have deadly weapons (knee , elbow) matched with hard hard training. you just got a combo things thats outstanding.

I read once an article on this Thai Master in the States Chai S something (he taught Dan Insoanto of JKD fame MT). he said that he had students with just 6 months thai training, beating black belts with years in other styles all over the place..

So mix that with some other skills, RBSD training, escapes from chokes, weapon disarms, ground work. and you got a lethal method.

Sometimes a punch is a punch is a punch, and the same for a kick, and trained Thai style... you miles ahead...

    .

I reckon this could be proven in a court of law!!!:D
( I know cause I was in MA about 2 years before

    .

I understand exactly where you're coming from Millionaire. That's one of the reasons why i took up and subsequently abandoned a number of MA styles over the years. I just felt "Am I really learning how to defend myself or be a good fighter by kicking air??".

Living Lethal Little sod would be more appropriate.Does antybody know of Cizia Zyke? He's a french bloke who has written a number of books about his violenet adventuers around the world.Apparantly he was no mean hand at muay thai and kicked around a few of thier champions back in the 80's.

have a wee look at this

personally I'd have to go with Buakaw Pramuk as I think hes a fully rounded fighter that can use all his 8 weapons to the same effect... but in saying that Samkor can kick like a bull :)

Michael - thai is so easy cos no one ever made it hard :) there are no belts no forms or patterns just 8 weapons thrown over and over and over and over in the same manner till they got all pistons flying and very few stand up fighters can compete with its ferocity

thailand is one of the only countries never to be conquered in battle, something that they are extremely proud of, the attribute some of this to the fact that the fought simple but hard, and i suppose thats what thai is today in gyms in Ireland, simple but hard

    Best comment ever.

I would also go with Paramuk, against most oposition. What I've seen of him has been perfect. Really well rounded and with a viscious right kick of his own.

lads check out Yodsenklai Fairtex, he skooled JWP at the 1st WBC thai boxing show. I'm fairly sure he would beat Por.Pramuk too

My top 4 thai fighters at the moment(not all time) would be:

    Yodsenklai
    Por.Pramuk
    Jomhod
    Samkor

    what is Brazilian Vale Tudo?

    Portugese for "anything goes."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

John has fought Vale Tudo rules before (and is the Irish BJJ badass)
but I think he's trying to imply that Brazilian Vale Tudo isnt a style rather its a rule set. A fighter could train ping pong for brazilian vale tudo competition. Mightn't help though.

So Muay Thai is often used within VT competition.

And therefore comparing one versus the other doesnt really work.

    :)
