DR Congo captain Lomana LuaLua left Cairo on Sunday after he found out about his son's death, the African Cup of Nations official website said.

The Portsmouth striker flew to England ahead of the original departure date for the Congo delegation.

Congolese officials kept news of LuaLua's son a secret since January 20th as not to affect the player during the team's African campaign.

Congo were eliminated from the African Cup after losing to hosts Egypt 4-1 in the quarter-finals on Friday.

How anyone can keep that a secret from a father (or anyone for that matter) is pure scum!

    Condolences to the family

Who the hell are you to call his family scum? You have absolutely no idea who they are or what they were thinking at the time.

EDIT: Misread that. Recently got into a heated argument about this very subject and I thought I was about to do it again. Humble apologies to Mr Raheny...

I'm sure he was referring to the congolese officials, not the guys family.
At least thats how I interpreted it.

I think you need to re-read the OP, he called the Congo officials scum , not the family

The officials are sick scum from keeping this from him. Obviously they saw the football tournament to be more important:(

    Apologies to Raheny Red..

It was the family's decision to keep the information from him though.

Fair play to him for playing on Saturday. And it was nice to see both teams sporting the black armband.

Also, I gained some respect for RVN from his post-match interview. He commented Lua Lua and seemed really genuine and nice. And usually I hate the poacher! (Liverpool fan)

Well, if it was the families choice not to tell him then I feel they were very insincere to do so.

Apologies again for the over reaction but the way I was reading about this at the weekend they were talking alot about how it mean so much to the family and to the son that Lomana play in the tournament. There's a lot of talk now about the government not letting him know because they wanted his mind focused on the tournament but really, do you think they could really do that unless the family hadn't ok'd it.

"I thank Ruud and the lads from Man United - about six or seven of them came over to me and told me to keep my head up. I wanted to score as a message for my little boy who passed away. I didn't do that but I tried my best. I dedicate that performance to my little boy, although I don't want to tell you his name. That's my privacy. It was very hard for me to go out and play. I'm choking. It's been so hard. I wasn't told until just after the game against Egypt and I had to come back quick. I haven't found it easy sleeping for the last week or so. I believe God gives and God takes and I've been trying so hard to put it behind me and try to focus on football. He was an innocent boy and I will love him always but he's in good hands. It was my decision to play because when I'm at home I just keep thinking about it all so I need to keep myself occupied. This is my job so I've just got to get on with it. But I want to say it was nice to get the opposition coming to me. That shows it's not just about football. For 90 minutes we might be enemies but we're human beings and we care about each other. They all wore black armbands and I really appreciated that gesture. It meant a' lot.

this is one of the reasons i don't pay attention to soccer any more. it's just gone beyond a joke. i would instantly lose all respect for the people who kept the death secret if i was in his position. and i've had enough people die on me to know how it feels.
