I was looking at Voip Stunt. They say that you can make free phone calls to landlines in Ireland. Is this possible and how. Will I or the person who is recieveing the call be charged anything? Have you used this service, how did you find it?
    Thanks.

Voipstunt.com. voipcheap.co.uk etc. all work fine with either the software client or with an ATA. Watch out for free countries becoming non-free over time (also be careful of per-minute rates to mobiles) but until then free means free.

Thanks for your reply. How are you billed for calling mobiles, does it go on your eircom bill?

Non-free destinations are Pay-As-You-Go. You pre-pay into your account.

Thanks very much. So I take it it is free for the time being, until we are starting to be charged;) . Thanks very much for your help.

Are these SIP providers though? If so, what are the ATA config parameters or how can they be discovered? Looking at VoipStunt, it's looks a bit proprietary with their own downloaded client. It doesn't look like it's true SIP.

The story is that you get 25mins free to anywhere in the world. You pay €10, and that lasts you 120 days. I am thinking of doing it, it would work out cheaper. Does the tener last 120 days, and you will you get anything taking out of your account once you don't ring mobiles? Is that correct? Is there a time limit you can be on?

Yes you can use a SIP ATA with them. Register a username/password with them first using the respective downloaded client. You can then uninstall the client if you wish. Using an ATA try the following settings :

    SIP server :connectionserver1.voipcheap.co.uk
    (or connectionserver2.voipstunt.com for Voipstunt)
    Username : yourusername
    Password : yourpassword

You may also need to play with Stun settings if audio is not working properly (this depends mainly on how your own network is setup). You can discover the relevant connection information by starting a network protocol analyzer like Ethereal while running the software client. This will allow you to see what the software client itself is trying to do and what data is passing between your PC and the devices at the other end. With a bit of practice you can figure out what you need to know (or you could just use the settings above if you're lazy).

I think you've answered most of your own questions there ;). As far as I know there aren't any limits once there's money in your account.

I think they end your call after 60 minutes but it is just a matter of ringing again to continue your call

Does the person that recieves the call get charged?

Free still means free. You can ask the question any way and as many times as you want but the calls will still be free to free destinations.

Why don't you just try it out and let us know how you get on?

I have used it. Made the free calls first:rolleyes: , lasted 25mins. Then put a tener into my account, and I think I am able to make calls for free for 120 days, without topping up. Great service:) . Thanks for telling me.

I am using the voipstunt client. What is ATA, and what is the difference?

ATA means Analogue Telephone Adapter and is a small hardware device that connects any analogue handset (or DECT cordless etc.) to a VoIP provider. It works independently of your computer so it means you don't need to be stapled to your computer all the time to make calls.

So it is a phone that works off your computer, but is aay from your computer. Do you know where I can get one cheap?

Forget the computer! Switch it off. Throw it in the bin! Now pick up the handset and dial. The computer has nothing to do with the call, the ATA (which is plugged in to your network) looks after everything.
