Going to the states for Patricks day. Hoping to cash in on some cheapy clothes over there. Does anyone know the score - do you have to get far out of town to buy them or are they cheap (in comparison) with Ireland all over the place.

I know about taking the labels off etc to avoid customs :D

    Cheers!

They dont care tbh, i left tags on all my stuff, which was quite a lot.

Clothes are generally cheaper (comparison) but if you are looking for really really cheap clothes you need to outlet malls. One of mates went there i'll get the details off her later.

Where abouts will you be staying?
If you can find the smallish malls around NY you'll find really cheap clothes.

Im not in it for the cheapy cheapy but if i could get some good names at some good prices would be great.

NY City is a bit expensive for clothes compared to the out of town outlets.

Jersey Gardens is the closest big outlets.
it is located in Elizabeth NJ.

the other popular one is Woodbury Common but it's quite far out.

make sure you bring a passport and claim your visitor vouchers at the information desk. You can save up to 80% on Dublin prices.

We went there last Feb adn are going again in Nov. Defianately worth making hte trip out to Woodberry Commons, bout an hour on hte bus. You would want to leave at about 8 in the morning and the last bus was about 7.30 in the evening and we didn't get to alot of the shops, it's unreal.. Make sure hte first thing you do is get a trolley adn voucher books, they get you extra discounts.. New Jersey is also worth visiting.. We laso spent a day in Macy's, which I didn't really enjoy, not much of a sale on but aparently it is hit and miss for value..

    Njoy...

Woodbury Common is great. www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/store_listings.asp? so you can plan the shopping in advance. When we were there the Reebok store were doing buy 2 pairs get 3rd pair free as well as other offers. There are lockers near the bus stop to store shopping bags. Anything we bought at the outlets was much cheaper than Macys. If you don't want to go out of NY Century 21 opposite ground zero is often recommended. Enjoy.

Went to Jersey Gardens last month. I'm only sorry i didn't buy more stuff. I took tags off all the clothes but i really didn't need to. Got back into Ireland at around 8 in the mornin... not a sign of a customs person in shannon! Jersey Gardens was excellent.

Jersey Gardens is a good place to shop... NYC has a great selection of clothes and whatnot, but everything there is SO marked up because it's NYC!!! heck, I live in Jersey and go up to the Gardens every now and again...

NJ isn't anything big to visit... spend more time in NYC, unless you want to hit up Atlantic City... which can be a good time.... actually, I'm moving out of New Jersey though, moving back down to North Carolina at the beach... if anyone ever gets a chance to visit NC, check out the Outer Banks and Wilmington(where I'm moving to).... anyhow, good luck!! message me back if ya have any questions...

If anybody wants to know exactly where jersey Gardens is, it's next door practically to Newark airport.
I finally went there a few weeks ago and did woodbury common aswell.
It's well worth a visit and clothes are cheap- very cheap.
Suits for $40 - where can you go wrong?

By the way if you go to the visitors centre in Maceys and present your passport they will give you a discount card that will give you11% off anything you buy there-so you basically get 3% more than the sales tax in discount
    Dont forget that!!

Maceys is far better by the way if you want a decent sweater/jumper than the outlet centres.

im heading over to New York in a few weeks and so am looking for info on Woodbury Common and Jersey Gardens... Are there lockers to store your bags in Jersey Gardens like there are in Woodbury Common?? Also i am planning to buy a fair bit so what is the story on bringing them back on the bus?? would there be room to store a load of bags or is the bus like a bus eireann one where there is a lot of compartments for storage??

    Technical question:

I'll be popping over to NY soon and I need to move fast. How long does it take from landing at JFK to actually getting out of the airport? A friend of mine went over and didn't get out until 9:30pm even though the scheduled arrival was at 7:50pm. The plane took almost an hour to reach the terminal after landing. Is this typical? Is Newark Airport any faster?

I'm particularly interested in how quickly you can expect to escape if you're on the flight that arrives at 1pm. Is 2pm unrealistic?

When I went to JFK we were out fairly quickly, didn't have to wait for luggage as it was waiting for us. We found it much quicker than Dublin, then again that wouldn't be hard. I reckon you should be out by 2pm if you arrive at 1pm. It was lunchtime when we arrived but I can't remember exactly how long it took, very quick though.

    Hi gazzer,
When i was in Jersey gardens i found there were a few problems like you listed! There is no locker system.. i asked. You have to plan your shopping carefully so you wont be walking around with too many giant bags! Also the bus is like a bus eireann bus.. also it was fairly packed both trips, to and from. Its about 40 mins on the bus so get to the stop nice and early so you'll get a seat. You can then cover yourself in bags. It's still worth the trip i reckon, although i havent been to woodbury commons.

You should be outside JFK airport within an hour of landing, it could have been just a busy day when it took longer for your friend. There will be lots of coaches etc to bring you to Manhattan. Budget for around $20 per person.

Woodbury Commons is excellent, though you need to allow a full day for it. It's about an hour either way, and the tickets we got (though we could have been screwed for them) were $37 per person and you get a book of coupons that cover most the stores (e.g. "20% off when you spend $100 or more in Quiksilver" type deals). There are over 200 shops there, and it takes quite a while to get around. Herself got a handbag there for $60, and the exact same bag was over $250 in the airport.

Century 21 is a real bargain basement type place - no changing rooms at all, and it is pot luck if there is good stuff there. Didn't think much of it.
