Why was 'Ireland's Call' sung in place of 'Amhrán na bhFiann' in Paris on saturday last?

I'm not a terribly patriotic person but i just did not get this.

can anyone here shed some light on the matter?

    Thanks

'Amhrán na bhFiann' is only sung in Lansdowne Road as Ireland is the host nation. Irelands Call is the offical anthem of Irish Rugby so it is sung when games are outside the republic.

Horrific. how many other nations have a 'Rugby Anthem'?

None as far as I know although SA have a four language anthem to represent all cultures etc. Amhran na bhFiann doesn't represent the 32 counties. It has been this way for about 10 years.

    Why is it horrific?

Granted it's not the best tune in the world, but it is to symbolise the Irish rugby team, that's a team that represents the 32 counties of the island of Ireland and not any particular country.

If you wanted to be pedantic, you could also argue that both Wales and Scotland have "rugby" anthems. As they are both constituent nations of the United Kingdom, "God Save The Queen" is the offical national anthem of both countries and the entire United Kingdom.

The two most often considered as the unofficial national anthems (and most often presented as their anthems at sporting matches) are "Flower of Scotland" and "Hen wlad fy nhadau" (Land of my Fathers).

I'm not suggesting for one moment that Wales and Scotland should use God Save the Queen - I think it's great that each of the nations have their own anthem, and Ireland's Call is the anthem of the Irish rugby team.

Yeah pay attention in history class kiddywinks.

us old codgers are getting tired of repeating the same answers.

mind you if Ireland's Call was a better song we wouldn't be having this conversation.
