Dunnes Stores has a DVD Recorder for €89 : Aurex DVD Recorder .

Anyone know where I could find out more info about it?
I'm looking for a really cheap way of converting old VHS tapes to DVD (and then edit them on a PC).

Many thanks in advance for any info.

Saw the poster last night but couldn't find any of them.
    Great price for a recorder.

Got the last one in Dunnes Rathmines this morning. They were assigned three last night. Seems like an okay machine with a paper manual and quickstart guide. Doesn't say region free but it seemed to play a US NTSC DVD I tried. Haven't tried recording anything yet. Sturdily built and slim with lots of features. I presume it's a rebadged something-or-other. Anyone have any more info?

Quick reply to my own post.

Pretty sure it's the same as Crown CDVDRW300. Ebuyer info below.

Supervalu appear to have a similar deal. Its a HCL DVD +R/+RW recorder. It claims to have progressive scan capability. I only saw it in passing so I didn't get a great look at the detail. Its advertised as 89.99 but if you look closely you see there's an additional 10 euro PRF so its 99.99.

I'm not sure of HCLs background although from some internet articles they appear to be linked to Toshiba. If anyone knows anymore about it I'd be happy to hear.

BTW I saw them in Supervalu in Glanmire in Cork. They had I would say approx. 10-12 in stock.

Dunnes stores in Douglas Cork got six of those dvd recorders in yesterday and sold a grand total of zero;) so if you are around that way there should'nt be any trouble getting one.

the dunnes one doesnt play any xvid I try to play on it anyways so doesnt seem like a repackaged crown CDVDRW300 anyways

In fairness you wont get a DVD recorder that plays xvids for less than €200

Powercity have a POWERPOINT DVD RECORDER for €159.00

    DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/

    WMA/MPEG4/JPEG/DVD+R/RW PLAY

(I've been told it plays xvids also but have not confirmed this)

I have one of the older POWERPOINT DVD players which lasted me 6 years without any problems only to stop completly last week. Can't even switch the damn thing on now; I don't think they like being moved around. But I would still consider buying the dvd recorder.

I stand corrected. That powerpoint one sounds pretty good,I would buy that if it played x-vids.

All right, all right. I all ready said I stand corrected.

Am I right in saying that while these DVD players do play x-vids, its only for a limited time until the x-vid codec changes.

Supervalu HCL DVD Recorder... 89.99 .... euro 5.00 PRF so its 94.99.

BTW I saw them in Supervalu in Glanmire in Cork. .
    they still have about 5....
    Anybody comment on them ?

What's the deal with DVD recorder's and USB ports ? I saw some excitement a while ago about the possibility of modding a DVD recorder to add a USB port....
Is this to enable recording to a HardDrive ? or to facilitate reading from the HardDrive ? or both ....:confused:

Andis this one likely to have a similar PCB capable of being modded ?

From what I read some of these have a media card reader which has a USB header so they use that. I assume just to read from the drive.
