Win98 Pc hangs on booting - no icons appear but mouse moves

    Greetings

I have been asked to try to fix a Win98 PC. The PC boots up but when the desktop picture appears, nothing else happens. You can still move the mouse but no icons appear. <ctrl><alt><del> just lists two valid processes running.

The most recent piece of software put on it is Xoftware Spyware remover. I have booted the PC up from a bootable floppy but the Xoftware Uninstaller will not run in DOS mode. I edited the autoexec.bat file to execute the uninstaller but the same thing happens. Booting up in Safe Mode etc. still leads to the same result.

Any ideas before I do a system restore using the manufaturers recovery CD?

    Cheers

    McGinty

Is it First Edition or Second Edition?

    Hi Fletch

    It's the second edition.

Boot to Command Prompt Only (hold down Ctrl Key at Boot)
Run the following command to restore the computer to a previous state
    scanreg /restore
Choose a restore date previous to the installation which appears to cause the problem.

    Hi Tadgh

Holding down control does not seem to boot up in command prompt. Can I run scanreg from a bootable floppy?

    Cheers

Hitting F8 key just as Starting Windows 98 appears will bring up a boot menu.
Command Prompt only is one of the choices.
A Win98 Boot disk should work if it contains the Scanreg.exe executable.
