    Sounds just like a slightly fuzzy distortion. Try out the Boss OD-2R Turbo Overdrive pedal for a similar sound.

    Pedal wise its just fuzz/distortion. But there's also the way it is eq'd, the guitar he uses, the vintage amps he uses, the tunings he uses and the way he plays guitar that also contribute to that sound.

    Seriously, it's an old tube compressor. Look at the video, he has a large box at his feet. It is a tube compressor. Listen to the way the notes die off very quickly during the solo and the way there's loads of noise. That's caused of a compressor turned up all the way.
