I was just wondering what the rules are when someone dosent have enough money to continue betting in a game of poker. Say that during a game someone raises the pot by 20 euros and the next guy only has 10 euros lft. Does he have to quit or can he bet? If he can bet and he wins how is the pot shared out?

He can call all in for 10 Euro. The other player takes backs 10 of the 20 he bet. Money matches money. A player can't bring money to the table in the middle of a hand.

the player with only ten euro is said to be "all in"

It is easier to explain in example form.

    Three players playing.
    Player a has 60

    Players B and C have 90

Blinds are 5/10 and all players call the big blind leaving Them with 50/80/80 respectively.

Player A checks the flop and player B bets 80 and Player C calls, Player A calls too. So 50 of the 80 committed to the pot by players B and C go into the main pot (which stands at 30 from the three players blinds) A side pot is set up between players B and C which is 60.

If Player A wins the main pot of 180. Then the second best hand will take the sidepot containing 60.

    Hope that helps

this is the modern game where we play "table stakes" - you can only play what is on the table, and cannot be bet out of a pot just for being all-in.

In the olden days, you had to be able to cover any bets, which is what you saw in movies with people throwing car keys, wedding rings, deeds and iou's in the pot. A Big Hand For A Little Lady has a guy who died mid-game, and the wife has to take the hand to the banker to secure a loan to cover the bet into them.

I vaguely remember seeing that film, but can't remember how it ended. What did she hold?

I don't think the hand was ever shown. It made it really interesting because you never knew if she really had a monster or her and the banker where in it together on a huge bluff.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. The reason I ask is im developing an online poker game and need to get this right. I have the game nearly complete apart from handling situitions like this (All In). Shoutman thats an informative responce but I was wondering one thing. Your example is based on 3 players with one player having to go all in. I want to expand this to work with n amount of players. What if there was 5 players and with 60, 70, 80, 90, 90 euros. Binds again are 5/10 leaving them with 50, 60, 70, 80, 80. All players go all in again. Does this mean that there is a main pot and 3 subpots. What happens if the guy that put 70 euros in wins.

Well in this case the guy gets the mainpot and the first sidepot, the next pot is played out between mr 80 and mr 90 and mr 90.
    Make sense?

There are as many sidepots as necessary. Centrepot might have players A,B,C,D,E, sidepot1 players B,C,D,E, sp2 players C,D,E, sp3 players D,E.

You can only win a pot that you are in for. If player A has the stone cold nuts he wins the centre pot (300), and if player D has the best of the other hands then player D wins sp1, sp2 and sp3 for a total of 90.

In that situation players B, C and D would be knocked out.

Where are you developing your game? No offence, but if you are unsure about that you better get it all checked out before you open it to the general public. Hope it goes well for you.

Edit: didn't see you specify player with 70 winning. I am not editing the above though.

Thanks for the replys. I should be about to go on this information. The client im developing this for hasn't got a clue about poker. He is obviously somebody who is acting as a middle man and is just in it to make an easy buck subcontracting it to me. The software will be thoroughly tested before its made available to the general public.

    Hi

I have come up with a few Scenerio's to test my understanding of the problem and would be greatfull if someone could tell me if im correct. They are bassed on 5 players A, B, C D, E

    SCENERIO 1:
    Say A=€80, B=€80, C=€80, D=€80, E=€80
If A won then he would take all so A would win 80x5 = €400
if A and D won then they would split the pot (80x5)/2 = €200 each
    So individualWinnings = totalPot/numWinners

    SCENERIO 2:
    Say the bets look like the following A=€60, B=€70, C=€80, D=€90, E=€90

If player B where to win here she would get €60 from A and €70 from C, D, E and herself because she can only take from others whet she has bet herself. This would leave C=€10 D=€20 and E=€20 which would be bet again amounst these players.
If D or E won they would take the full €50 but if C won he could only take €30 (his own 10 and 10 from each of the other 2) leaving D or E to win the last €20.

    SCENERIO 3:
    Again A=€60, B=€70, C=€80, D=€90, E=€90

Say its a tie between player A, B and D

    Pot a is €60x5 = €300 / 3winners = €100 each for A, B, D
    leaving B=€10, C=€20, D=€30, E=€30
    Pot b is €10x4 = €40 / 2winners = €20 each for B and D
    leaving C=€10, D=€20, E=€20
Pot c is €50 for player D as she can take all of C, D and E

So at the end player A=€100 B=€120 and D=€170

Scenerio 3 will be combined with Scenerio 2 if the entire pot has not been shared out the first time. This would happen if ony A and B won leaving C=€10, D=€20, E=€20 to be played amoung players C, D and E.

    Hopefully I understand this correctly.

    Thanks
    John.
