Are there any free DVD trials around? I know Screenclick were offering a 6 week trial in conjunction with Centra but the Screenclick website is currently offline. Anyone know where else I can get a trial?

Tried to sign up but their website is atrocious.
Keeps giving me garbage when trying to submit my credit card details.
Pity we cant use Blockbuster and Lovefilm here .

Really?! Had no problems my side.

But speaking of which, i found ScreenClick absolutely horrible to use - printing ASP data to the page and the link to pay only responds in Internet Explorer - terrible!!

I'm with Busy Bee after switching from Screenclick. Almost as bad. I'm lucky to get 1 dvd a week as the post is so slow (so they say!).

Screenclick's website is a load of crap but there turnaround times are just about OK.

Some of the codes given in these threads might still work:

I see Screenclick in now affiliated with Lovefilm.
This Sunday on the 19th of Feb will have our biggest press promotion to date. EVERY copy of the Sunday Times will be bagged with a copy of Donnie Darko in a Screenclick wallet. This will be the biggest DVD promo by a paper to date - a FREE DVD and 1 month FREE DVD rental with EVERY paper. This will be the start of a long-term partnership with the paper so be sure to pick it up.

Dont use Screenclick they are terrible and it is not the postal system as on your account I can see that they have received DVDs back but they have not sent out anything it can take up to a week from when they get the DVD back to when they actually send out the next one

I was on the Gold option which is supposed to be 3 dvds at a time but I was lucky to get 1 DVD a week and then it was rarely a new release.

Customer service is non existant they dont answer emails and when they do it never makes any attempt to explain why they did not send any DVDs just says your next DVD was despatched today

In fairness to An post they have never been a problem 95% of the DVDs arrive next day and the rest the next working day.

    Screenclick AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

I second that! they were ok when I signed up first but they never send me anything unless my wishlist of 25 films is full and when it is they send me the worst ones I have on it. If none of the films on your wishlist are available they dont bother to email you and tell you that either unlike busybeedvd. They also send the dvds in paper sleeves so no wonder the dvd's are scratched to bits and cracked. There website is a joke as it barely works.

Well restarted after 6 months

If you're trying to pimp a site might be worth while putting the web address up there!

I would not be impressed with ScreenClick at all, massive delays in sending out DVDs, I have not tried the other though.

Oh shock horror I did not see that post on any other thread about movistar before, 3 posts, all the exact same. I smells a pimp ;)

If you are looking for a free trial there is one with moviestar. Have you seen their website? Looks better than the rest. What do you think?

Its by Gavin McConnon and Iain McConnon. The McConnon brothers have a few other businesses. The moviestar website seems to be cheaper and have a better selection of TV and new films. The website seems much easier to navigate.

Whats your expeinece of postage delays?
Hmmm, a new one on the scene. How good are they tho?!! They're offering a 2 week free trial and a free dvd player when you sign up.

The only problems with Screenclick I found was they kept sending me the wrong DVDs, despite me explaining to them I was getting the wrong ones. Only sorted it yesterday after calling them. Found getting DVDs very fast tho?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭okidoki987

a free dvd player when you sign up.

Bit silly as you'd have to have one to play them in the first place unless they are trying to get the people who don't have DVD players onboard.

People like free stuff, and when they hear "free dvd player" they think "wow".

But anyway, read the terms and conditions, you get the dvd player when you subscribe to the site but you have to stay with them for 4 months, otherwise they charge you €45 for the dvd player.

I'm gonna try them out and see what they're like. They're cheaper than both busy bee and screenclick.

How did your trial go then?

yes how did it go? I got warned by other members of boards about the people who run that company but if there ok i will give it a try. at present they would sound too dodgey to touch so would not give them my mastercard number.

I'm sorry to pull up an old thread! But I've been considering giving MovieStar a try. I've heard nothing but good things about them through word of mouth, but then the people I've been talking to may just have been lucky!

Surely quite a few people on boards have tried this service now and will have opinions on it, please share!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Been using them for about 3 weeks now and far superior to both Screenclick and CDWOW.

DVD's sent out very promptly and not a scratched one yet.. excellent service!

    Much recommended!

I have to agree with Basquille.
Service from Moviestar is very good.
I've just finished the second week of a 6 week trial and I've received 9 DVD's so far.
Excellent selection, fast turnaround and nice website.
At this rate I'll get 27 free DVD's.
€18.99 per month for the 3 DVD package is very good value.
Lovefilm in the UK charge £15 ~ €22 for the same package .
If this service can be maintained then I will gladly continue my subscription.

yes moviestar is good but has anyone got the free dvd player yet ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 867 ✭✭✭Maxwell

Have tried them all and Busybee are the best by a mile.

Screenclick really are dreadful and you never seem to get the titles you have asked for. I had listed 35 or so titles I wanted to see on a 2 title package, and I received 1 I would never list to see ......Duece Bigalo......I sent it right back and cancelled my subscription, idiots.
    Avoid

Still on trial with Moviestar and they seem ok so far....

Think I will end up going back to busybee though

You have to stay with them for 4 months after the trial or something like that, right?

The DVD player is a cheeky way to get you locked into a 4 month contract without you actually agreeing to it. Supposedly you get it when you sign up and then get screwed when you don't actually want to keep the service any more. I'm guessing the DVD players are worth far less than the €45 they'll charge for you not keeping the service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

    Yeah, that's true xebec.

I didn't check the box for the free DVD player on sign-up as:

    a) i had no intention of staying with them any longer
    b) with a free trial on ScreenClick and Moviestar going, i'm gonna have my fill of DVD's until Screenclick end their trial at Christmas
    c) i wouldn't even use the DVD player.. have 2 or 3 spare ones lying around in fact.
    d) as you said, the DVD player is probably worth shag all and considering you can get them for as cheap as €30 - €40 now, it's not worth it!

I was wondering about that, it's good to know that you have the option of not accepting the DVD player! Makes the service more tempting!

Have a list of 30 dvds, mostly foreign and arthouse, and haven't received a dvd in over a month...

where did you get a 6 week trial?? they seem to be only giving out a 2 week on their homepage?

Sarah.. click for the Metro trial. And the code is 'Metro' :D

Cheers for the code! Had been trying to get my hands on a copy of the Metro to get it :) 6 weeks is far better than 2!

Sorry for the obvious question but are you trying the right address, the support one?

I've been with screenclick for about a year....mostly okay. I check my profile fairly regurally to make sure they receive and send them back and if it takes more then 2 days I just send an email and they get back to me fairly soon. The service does go through high and low points, the O2 deal seemed to really slow them down as they took on too much business but it seems okay again now. My only complaint would be the range of dvds is limited and would like to see more added more regurally.
