Here's a question that I dont think has been asked here before.

I'm buying a new car which has a satnav screen in it and TV capability.

I've seen freeview tuners that you mount in the boot that in the UK give you loads of decent channels.

Does anyone know what channels I'll pick up with it here?

As far as I know you'll only get the terrestrial channels that broadcast on VHF. ie RTE1&2, TV3 and TG4. I've used one and the signal (in Dublin) is pretty poor and 'grainy'. You will need a 'diversity' antenna set up (at least 2 antennas). It has no relation to the sat nav system - this uses a seperate antenna which is usually mounted on the windscreen.

unless you can pick up a Freeview signal you'll get nothing with it. Ireland doesnt have DTT

UHF from Three rock is the best signal for most of Dublin

There is only Analog TV in Ireland. You won't get DTT/Freeview any normal place mobile in a car.

Note it is illegal in UK and Ireland to have TV screen anywhere visible to the driver.
    Exceptions:
My two way Mobile radio has a separate control head. It can be switched to video, but this must not be done while engine is running. In fact the video feed MUST NOT be connected so that if video is inadvertantly selected there is a blank screen.

If thats the case every driver who's car is fitted with a satnav screen is breaking the law, as are thousands of BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc owners.

watty is right afaik. Driver can see a TV screen, but should not be able to see anything unless the car is stationary. So, for wiring purposes, maybe wire it to the handbrake switch, so when handbrake is on, the TV works.

I'm not sure if this law includes Satnav though, as Satnav woudl be useless if you can't use it when driving.

    /me shrugs.

Here's a question that I dont think has been asked here before.
Perhaps because this has nothing to do with foreign satellite.
    Shouldnt this be in DTT?
Lidl UK were selling minature DTT boxes last week, probably 12volt so easy enough to car mount.

I have seen articles recently about the possibility of satellite TV reception on future mobile phones. No idea how it could feasably work though.

If it's Freeview you're after, post a thread or read existing threads on Terrestrial forum.

If it's FTA satellite you're after, then read or search threads on Satellite forum.
