for bjj, you're size should only be an advantage, obviously if you're unfit, you'll gas more quickly but stamina will come with time. maybe flexibility will also be a problem. this guy, zuluzinho is a bjj purple belt

    PaddyC,

What height are you ??? do you know percentage body fat ????, not the biggest fan of Body fat questions, (Its a bit health clubby) but ascertain what type diet you would need for start of training.

If you are not physically active, start slow and build. Your body will need time to accustom itself to new stimulus.

are your goals to lose weight, become more flexible, more assertive etc.....

I'm not as qualified as some here to answer the question, but if I was you - I'd try put that weight into effect and work on a top game - A guy of your size could finish alot of people in side control.. But to be honest, just go to a few classes and get grips with it for yourself. Nothing beats hands on experience.

Try run twice a week if you can - If you've not been physically active in a while, BJJ can be very tiring and hard on the lungs. Run and get your cardio up a little bit. It will help alot in class.

Enjoy it,,,dont be putoff if you find the rolling gasses you out, after a while you'll pick up the fundementals and soon you'll be enjoying something that is also making you fit and loose some weight. Enjoy it ;)

BJJ is based around timing and leverage...not strength, speed etc etc. when you come to a closed door don't just try and smash your way through it....use the door handle!!

but liam's advice is spot on - enjoy it...at the end of the day the rest doesn't mean anything:)

It might be worth looking into a midweek class in addition

Try and find judo or wrestling as it will give you a similar sports specific conditioning -itll be good exercise and you'd get a bit of clinch (and ground with judo) training in.

Check your ego at the door and don't use your size or strength advantage. I have seen it many times the big guy and small guy start at the same time. The big guys wins at first in BJJ then the small guy perfects the details of the techniqes and beats the big guy. Work on technique, technique, technique.
