They just determine whether the drive is slave/master of cable select. Doesnt affect perfomance at all but may cause the drive not to register if you have 2 drives on one ide cable.

    lol.... ;)

no but realy, theres a key to on the drive you can follow to put the jumpers where you want them.

There are normially 3 settings with the jumpers:

    Master
    Slave
    Cable Select

As long as you have connected the drive and set the jumper correctly and it appears in the BIOS then no...performance will only be affected by the drives placement on the EIDE cable with SLAVE being slower than Master...and Primary being faster than the Secondary cable in my experience.

Take not of the HDD make and model number then go to their wesite and look at the documentation for it in their support section. Should show jumper setting it they arent etched into the surface at the pins. For primary IDE drive set it to Master. For secondary select Slave or CS.

    Dots.

    What are its specs?

Make a backup image and start a fresh install...backing up after installing the Office apps....then install the other apps you require in stages...with backups every once in a while.
Youll end up with a crisp and fresh OS that will be easily returned to its original and fastest setting after a 10/20...etc minute wait while Ghost/TrueImage does what it does best!

I always do that myself and whenever I have a problem...bam...I use the old but fully working image to return everything to normality!

The specs are something like this

    797mhz pentium 3
    320 mb ram
    30 gig harddrive
    Onboard graphics
    and a basic reative soundcard

As I remember there's a jumper that also sets the max size of the HDD seen by the OS. Its only on the older hdd's though... It was for backwards compatibilty for DOS/Windows machines....

Why? His jumper settings are going to have no affect on his perfomance.
